Villians need love too...

As strange as it may sound. I generally love most villians in anime. In my opinion, they keep the storyline interesting and add suspense to the story. There are a lot of villians out there who are very much disliked, hated, and misunderstood. I can understand for the most part why several people may not like them. Most of them aren't meant to be ( Read more... )

To be honest, I'm in the Escaflowne fandom, and Dilandau seems to be ratheer well-liked (if not always well characterized). Of course, the reasons seem to be less because he's a sadistic, pyromaniac soldier who is driven more than a bit insane by the loss of his men than because he's pretty good looking in an androgynous sort of way.

And, yes, I like good villains -- they add suspense to the show and even make the heroes look cooler (becuase if the heroes can show themselves to be more skilled than a powerful and smart villain, that's impressive)

Oops, I didn't know that Dilandau was actually well-accepted by everyone. I like the anime, Escaflowne, but I was never a great deal into the fandom. I've seen on several sites in the past, of people bashing him. But it's nice to hear that Dilandau isn't bashed too often.

I see it alot too...I've seen so many things that are to the effect of "OMG! Dilandau is a sick freak! He's so gross..." I for one, am a huge fan of Dilandau...^___^

But then again...I've always been a villian fan.

The normal targets in Escaflowne are Allen, Millerna and Merle. Van, Hitomi, and the villains (Folken and Dilandau) seem to be held in decent regard. Personally, I think I like Folken better -- I tend to go for clever villains over merely powerful and destructive. Though the Big Dilandau-related Spoiler is pretty cool.

I wasn't very fond of Naraku at first myself, and I haven't seen that much of his deeper side yet as I'm reading the English manga and not really following the anime. But I agree with you, he's actually quite contemplative and interesting ( ... )

Actually, getting into Hellsing fandom, I'm developing a fondness for Maxwell. And I don't really care much for Anderson. Guess that makes me weird.

I don't know much about the anime, Hellsing, both I agree with you on your opinions on Naraku and Viscious. But yeah, Viscious has some reason to feel the way he does, even though he went way overboard. His (now ex)girlfriend Julia loves his (now former) good friend Spike. So yeah, I can understand he feels betrayed.

Iscariot get bashed in silly fics (there was one of Anderson raping Integral. Good God). However the nuns are never bashed <3
Maxwell usually gets IC, anime wise (means he has a backstabbing bastard with dumb plans-which Hellsing falls for it *eye roll*-However, some people are starting to keep him manga-wise).

Millennium doesn't get bashed as a whole, except for one single incident. Joleen does get a bad treatment for being visually spooky and killing Pip. Schrodinger used to get as bashed as Incognito until they label him a werewolf (I still say is a cat boy) so he became 'cool' (Pff, I prefer the were-feline than the were-canine, more vicious. Simple minds the lot of them, if you ask me). Max is called piggy and fat but is more of teasing/well mean because he's liked. Captain is, with Rip, the most popular (pretty people). Doc is liked as well because he's Herr Doktor (six fingers are sexy). No one cares for Alahambra, and Valentine Brothers...

Mmm, I'm in a fandom (Pokémon) where the villians are *EXTREMELY* popular. Probably more so than the heroes.

But yet, for all Team Rocket's popularity, there's one member who seems to miss out on all the fan fun, and that's Bishasu the Marauder (Iron Mask Marauder, Lord Vicious the Mask, etc) from the fourth movie. Perhaps it's because of what he did to Jesse. Perhaps it's because he's a traitor. Perhaps it's because of how he wound up getting beaten (hey, Domino got defeated by a MOP BUCKET, and no one hates *her*...for that, anyway)

But I think it's mainly because the fans don't know what to do with a Rocket who's demonstratibly *evil*. Sure the Boss is a wicked SOB, but he's really only shown it in full force once, and a lot of people didn't *see* MR.

So hmm...

Whenever I start watching an anime, I always keep in mind that the main villain is probably a poor creature with a tragic past. My favorite examples would have to be: Nakago from Fushigi Yuugi, Muraki from Yami No Matsuei, and Dilandau from Escaflowne. But there are many more, I just can't think of them at the moment. ;)

Anyway, that's why I love villains. Because I feel sorry for them in the end.

I just started watching YnM yesterday =3 Only seen the first... three, four episodes so far (I've rented the rest though, so I'm going to watch the rest).

Took me so long to find. How was I to know that they translated the title??

I like Dilandau, myself =3. The anime one more than the manga one, but they're both rather likable (in my eyes) ^^;;

Aw! That sucks. Yeah, almost everyone calls it Yami No Matsuei, not Descendants of Darkness.

You like it so far, though? It's not a very long series but I really like it.

As for the Escaflowne manga- I'm not a big fan for obvious reasons. Van's character is such a brat, I have hard time reading it.

I know XP

I love it so far =3 Please tell me its longer than those 13 episodes though... **Whimpers**

I perfer the anime myself, but I am collecting the Manga still. Van is a brat >.> I perfer angsty!Van as opposed to I'm-a-brat-and-must-have-my-way-dammit!Van. (He reminds me of Vegeta in a way, and as much as I love that kind of character, it doesn't suit Van at all...)

Don't feel too embarrassed about admitting you're a villain fan. There's no doubt I myself am a sucker for them ^_^;; Large majority of my favourite characters fall into the bad guy category. Give me an interesting series and I'll usually fall for the antagonist 90% of the time XD. Villains really do keep the storyline intriguing for the fans ^_^.

Dilandau Albatou makes insanity so cool. He shows his craziness well. A bit like Yagami Iori from the King of Fighters games, although Iori is misunderstood and an anti-hero. Vicious is one of those men who has an aura that pulls fans in helplessly. What I mean is, you can't figure out why you are fascinated in someone like him. You just do in an odd way...

I often become very sympathetic around the villains who had tragic pasts and at times can really relate to them, which may sound rather wacky to some. A few of these people end up being the misunderstood type. I have a large list of villains who I adore so it would obviously be too long to write the names out in one go ( ... )

Yay, a fellow villian fan such as myself. I definately agree that they do keep the storyline interesting. Dilandau is one crazy bastard, but in good way. I too have lots of villians that I like (Kagura from InuYasha, Knives from Trigun, Legato from Trigun, etc.). Oh yeah and villianesses (female villians) are always good too. See Kagura from Inuyasha. I too, often feel sympathetic towards villians, often times towards the end of their demise. I don't watch much Yugioh, but I've always considered Kaiba more of an anti-hero. Similar to that of Vegeta from DBZ.

Yes I too have this thought. I didn't realise Vegeta had an interesting side to him until I watched later episodes. After observing his actions, I soon understood why there were quite a few fans of this Saiyan prince.

Vegeta is considered to be the most popular character on the show and has the biggest fanbase in DBZ. Yeah, I agree he is a pretty interesting character.
