we only got a total of 3 patients today/tonight on call! i stayed late to hang out with the night float intern (our friend) and to eat some birthday food with the nurses and to cause trouble. us three interns actually got shushed at one point. my friend even helped me with my very soft admission...it was the good life tonight. hopefully tomorrow ( Read more... )

Back in Boston...it was about time to start back at work. It's so funny having vacation when everyone else is working. It's fun, but not quite as fun as if others were out playing as well. The first time in August that I watched someone pass away (they were a do not resuscitate), I watched them go into a fatal arrhythmia then flatline. Last night was better than my first night of night float. Still little/no sleep, but less acute stuff overnight--very high blood pressure, severe agitation etc...low oxygen...high heart rate. ah, tonight was/is the first night of my two weeks of nights, covering anywhere between 30-50ish patients overnight, with thankfully some backup. Tonight was really hectic, busy nonstop from 8:30pm to now 4:30 am. In addition to medical issues, policy issues are often tough to deal with in the middle of night. what is wrong with me? i have been laying in bed for an hour in the call room and can't get to sleep? my mind isn't even racing...i've been staying up late for the last few nights because i've been working from 12-9pm in the ER, so this must be the end result! it is pretty chilly in here, though.
