Book recommendations, a question for the lurkers, and GIP.

I was very surprised to read that Tanya Huff's Smoke and... books aren't selling all that well, so herewith, please, consider this a recommendation! For one thing, they're simultaneously some of the scariest *and* funniest books I've read in years. The action takes place around a cable-syndicated vampire detective show, one of the actors on it is ( Read more... )

:) Thanks for the rec for Tanya Huff's books. I've contemplated picking them up, though I can't afford hardback. Still, the first two are out in paperback, so I may get those, and read the hardback from the library until it comes out in paper. I wasn't sure if they were worth reading, so it's good to hear they are. I own the series these books spun off of, but I kept hearing they weren't all that good and put off getting them.

My to read list is longer than I am, I think! Not that that's hard. I'm short. *laugh*

Still, thanks for the rec!

*Nods.* I've got most of the Vicki series, but haven't read any of the Smoke series even though I own the first book in it because I've had the impression it wasn't actually worth my time.

Huh, really? I'd have said this is some of Huff's best writing: clear, full of red herrings and characters who act like real people, including being (at times) idjits and/or assholes, and good plots. I liked them a lot. Hope you enjoy them!

I mostly lurk, though I have commented a few times.
I think I got here from your web page.

:)

Thanks for the book rec's. I'll add them to my growing list...

Yay, iced tea! Drink of the southern, and of the formerly-southern. And of Japan, where they have about ten million kinds. XD XD XD

You know me from TPM, right?

I never wrote or read TPM; I think I know you from Sleeps with Coyotes' mailing list? ::waves:: Hi!

Have you read the "Blood" series? I think these are a spin off of that one, though I have yet to read these ones. If not, I recommend them to you.

*Nods.* The Smoke series is a spin off from the Vicki series. The inside flap for the first book starts off with, "In 1991, a new series soared into the fantasy firmament with the publication of BLOOD PRICE, the first volume in Tanya Huff's acclaimed five volume masterwork, which followed the exploits of Vicki Nelson, private investigator, and vampire Henry Fitzroy." It goes onto explain how the new series is about Tony. It does say, "Relocating to Vancouver with Henry," which is why I picked it up. I haven't actually read the book so I can't say what I think of it. *Shrugs.*

Yup, I've read them, own copies of... hmm, most of them, actually. I'm going to buy the new edition of book five when it comes out in August, if only to get all the Vicki and/or Henry short stories, since I don't have most of them.

And yes, the Smoke books are a spinoff of those. Tony, Vicki's former street snitch, has grown up, gotten some formal education (as opposed to his street smarts) and is trying to make it in television. He wants to be a director. Really, making him as a production assistant on a TV show with a vampire detective has been hilarious. ::cheerful:: But then, I'm also easily amused.

I found the first two of the new ones in the local library and finished the first of them. Do you know where the short stories are? I've read one of them (of course I can't remember which one it is, or where I found it) and I'd like to read the others.

Hi!

You don't know me. I just used to check your journal for fic updates and found that I enjoyed reading your every-day entries. So it was easier to friend you. My name is Stacey and I have a lingering, residual fondness for the Highlander fandom and any crossover where I recognize the characters... /introduction. :)

Oh, I certainly don't mind that I've been friended, I was just curious as to who some of you are! Nice to meet you, glad you're here!

::grins at that description:: Hope you're enjoying all the crossovers, then!
