I was very surprised to read that Tanya Huff's Smoke and... books aren't selling all that well, so herewith, please, consider this a recommendation! For one thing, they're simultaneously some of the scariest *and* funniest books I've read in years. The action takes place around a cable-syndicated vampire detective show, one of the actors on it is "Lee Nicholas", one of the Production Assistants (PAs) is the former lover of a *real* vampire, and the stories are simultaneously wonderful and terrifying. Not to mention, the discussion in the latest book about the show's fandom and the implied abundance of slash fic, is hilarious. The first book, Smoke and Shadows, will make you paranoid about lighting conditions; the second one, Smoke and Mirrors, is a *very* good haunted house story with terrifying children, dead and otherwise; and Smoke and Ashes, the latest one, deals with some of the consequences of the first two books and with a demonic convergence (which makes me wonder if one too many New Age 'harmonic convergence' comments wasn't finally misheard).
Anyway, they're all excellent, and if it tells you anything, I bought all three in hardback!
Also, I'm a little startled and very curious: apparently, there are several people watching this journal whom I don't recognize, at least from your LJ names. So if you're reading this and we haven't chatted before in LJ comments, could you drop me a reply saying hi? If you're so inclined, let me know how you ended up over here? Thanks!
And last, my hot weather icon: iced tea, the house wine of the South!
