Book recommendations, a question for the lurkers, and GIP.

Jul 04, 2006 15:21

I was very surprised to read that Tanya Huff's Smoke and... books aren't selling all that well, so herewith, please, consider this a recommendation! For one thing, they're simultaneously some of the scariest *and* funniest books I've read in years. The action takes place around a cable-syndicated vampire detective show, one of the actors on it is ( Read more... )

Oh, Rhi! You know me...(the one who's only evil in small bursts). Right now I'm hip deep in LMB and Young Miles and now you've gone and added more books to my TBR pile PLUS the fics that you're working on that I've been trying sooo hard to keep my inner bitch from nagging you to finish while smothering my impulse to bribe you with cover art just to hurry you up (I'm still looking for someone who looks like Aidan) and then I get in such a tizz that I neglect my own fics and end up writing ridiculous run on sentences that really should be deleted and Whew! Now I need some ice tea...

BTW, how are Matthew and Duncan doing? :)

::amused:: Yes, I know you -- after those lovely pictures, I should! And no, nagging me never works. Usually, it sends me working on other things, actually.

And the next Duncan/Matthew piece is, gods help, stalled on page... ::checks stack:: 14. Slightly better than the last two, which both stalled on page 13, mid-sex scene in the case of Form and Substance. This one, the sex scene is done, and I'm just figuring out what goes where next. Unfortunately, Depth of Field will *not* be put out until I have it *and* the fifth (and last) story done. Largely because I'll get threatening email again if I do, and really? Been there, done that, still have plans drawn up for the virtual iron-shirt. ::considers:: Or maybe I'll just make it clear that flames will be *posted* for public ridicule? That's a thought....

Anyway, Ill Met By Moonlight is on page 18, I have three profic things up after that, but Southern Comfort probably *is* next, if that makes you feel any better?

I can't wait for Ill Met By Moonlight even though I'm not a Buffy fan. Somehow, you make those characters come alive for me in a way the series never did. :)

As for Southern Comfort, I never thought of Duncan and Matthew together until you threw that curveball (snerk) and now I just wonder how it all works out. I promise to keep my inner bitch in check. (Now my inner beach bunny and my inner chocolate addict are not your problem and aren't you glad?! ::giggles::)

I have my own inner chocolate fiend, yes, and she needs no reinforcement. And I didn't realize Duncan and Matthew work so well together until I tried it! ::cheerful:: HOpe you'll like Ill Met. TTYL!

Hi there! I'm your friendly neighbourhood lurker!

I got here via a link on your page, which I checked regularly to see what new fic you'd posted. I started off with your Methos/Duncan/Aidan stories, and got sucked in from there.

And I agree with you completely - Tanya Huff is a truly fantastic author. I've loved everything of hers I've ever read.

*Love* the icon! Schultzie! And hey, glad to see you here/meet you.

::cheerful:: I've had a couple of her books I couldn't quite get into, but I did adore these three, so I thought I'd recommend them.

Oh? I'm not too surprised. Don't get me wrong I love the Victoria Nelson Investigations series they're a spin off from. I own 4 out of 5 of those books. Somehow I'm missing Blood Pact. But she's made it pretty clear that the main character of the Smoke series is one of the secondary characters from the original one, Tony Foster, who I never had much interest in. I bought the first book in the Smoke series, Smoke and Shadows, because it mentioned the presence of Henry Fitzroy the vampire I bought the original series for. However, she said something about being done with the original leads, and it made me doubt there being enough of Henry in the book to suit me. I own the first book in the Smoke series, but I haven't read it.

Really? Henry seemed to be a secondary lead in Smoke and Shadows IMO, the way he was in the Blood series. Are you sure she didn't just mean she was done with the main lead, Vikki Nelson, because the proportion of Tony to Henry in this book felt about the same as the proportion of Vikki to Henry in the earlier series?

*Nods.* Really truly. She mentioned Henry by name twice. She said and I quote...

When I finished the fifth Blood book, I swore there wouldn't be another. When anyone asked, I told them that I'd said all I had to say about Henry Fitzroy, Michael Celluci, and Vicki Nelson. And I had. Sure, Smoke and Shadows takes place in the same mythos some years later, but it's not a sequel. Yes, Henry makes an appearance, but this is about Tony...

Hell, looking at that again I wonder what possessed me to even buy that first book. I mean she only said Henry made "an appearance."

::curious:: So... what, because it's not about the old characters, it couldn't possibly sell? She writes, and sells, other books. Quite well, in several cases.

And I didn't have much interest in Tony as a 15-year old street snitch and hustler, but as a 20+ adult trying to make a living in a field he loves, and one that offers a lot of chances for the readers to be amused, I do. ::shrug:: I mean, yeah, don't read it if you don't want to, but if you're saying you haven't read it, how do you know it's not worth reading?

I may have posted once or twice, but mainly I lurk. I followed from the website after falling in love with the 'Aidan' stories. Highlander was my first fandom and I have enjoyed reading your journal, even after you moved into other things...

I don't know if I've spoken to you before, but I got here from your website. I really liked your Aidan stories and began looking to find more in the same universe.
