Yesterday was a thing I almost never have. Yesterday was a damn near perfect day. A day that sucked in no perceivable way, and was filled with things that were actually good

The first time I heard a recording of myself reading some of my poems I couldn't believe it was me. I think that this was why it was the one and only time I have done it. It sounds nothing like me, no, not at all, was the least of the reaction. I would like to hear you read some of your stories, but would rather you were comfortable with it. It's not like someone has a gun to your head, which is the only way I'd do it again.
I think one of the reasons I so loathe getting someone's voicemail when I call is because I've heard recordings of my own voice. I know it makes no sense because the person I'm calling would hear me the same way live as they would in their voicemail, but it still bothers me to know I'm being recorded. And yet, despite my aversion to my own voice, I'm enthralled by interesting voices.
I don't listen to podcasts or audio-books because I have an audio processing issue where my brain gets quickly lost without some visual context for the words. I have been known to listen once in a great while just for the pleasure of hearing a certain voice or speech pattern, even though I can't really follow with any kind of comprehension for very long. I've recently been tempted to acquire Beverly Cleary's audio books because Stockard Channing does the reading, and I completely melt into her voice. As much as I loved reading Cleary when I was in that demographic, I'd rather hear Channing read something more grown up and less likely to involve silly acted voices.

I know this won't resolve your concerns, but I really enjoyed hearing you read at the HPLFF. You have good control of your pitch and inflection, and I think your vocal diction plays very well with your written diction.
Thank you. I do agree I have a good reading voice, it's just not the voice...you know, this very quickly becomes very silly. If only all my problems were so silly.
Maybe one way to look at this would be to view it would be is does your spoken voice reflect your written voice as opposed to whether or not your spoken voice matches some preconceived notion of how it 'should' sound.
As I write, I hear the words. In fact, as I have said in the past, the sound of the words are very important to my writing. But the sound that they occur to me in isn't my speaking voice.
in my humble opinion and just saying and all that....whiskeychickOctober 20 2010, 18:32:11 UTC
Your voice is powerful, strong and bleeds with intellect. Not any a quality that is loathesome. Stories you read with your own voice have that much more to offer.
Damn, if I'd gotten it together to mail Dagon out on Monday, you might've gotten it yesterday along with the other good stuff and been so happy you might've actually...smiled.

Nah, it's better that you didn't. This way, I'll have something good on some soon-to-come crappy day.

If only I had access to some really good voice manipulation software.

Well...I suppose my voice is, at least, interesting.

I heard about that and thought it could be very cool.

This is the problem I have with both podcasts and audiobooks. I want good readings, not voice actors making a shambles of things.

Now I'm beginning to think people will think I was fishing for compliments.

I've said as much before when you weren't troubled over how your voice sounded.
Now I'm confused, as I can't recall a time when I wasn't troubled at how my voice sounds.
