Thanks for all the lovely well wishes!

I am in Tampa and it's freeeeeezing. So much for getting away to someplace warm. I don't think it will go above 45F while I'm here.

I've met a couple of nice people and met one doctoral student whose interests overlap with mine. And apparently there is a Cheesecake Factory near my hotel so that might be my ( Read more... )

The session on public data sets wasn't very useful then? That's a serious bummer if it wasn't.

No, it turned out to be a session on ONE specific publicly available data set. And when I asked questions about teasing out sexual orientation from the data, the woman hemmed and hawed and said "there's a way, but only with the most recent data because the Feds wouldn't let them before" (It's the national longitudinal survey). This is why I want to apply to the Williams' Institute seminar on publicly available data sets. But they haven't released info on when that will happen again ( ... )

I'll be interested to hear your views on the survey- these things so often end up regurgitating 'what everbody knows'..........

If you need relaxation BTW, there's a nice piece of Max Bruch over on mine- based on the Kol Nidre and played by the incomparable Mischa Maisky :o)

Well it's a national longitudinal survey and something I may want to take a look at once I've finished my PhD. But yeah, as these things go the regurgitation of what we already know is the obvious point of entry for many.

I have just returned from a most triumphant day and shall have a listen to your post while I peruse my flist. Merci!

Sorry to hear that Florida still hasn't warmed up! What's the point in having conferences in places like that if you can't make the most of the sunbathing?! But hopefully it will prove useful intellectually. And hey, a Cheesecake Factory is always good! I don't think I've been to one since we went to the Orlando one together!

Someone told me today that Florida was the ONLY state in the entire country to NOT get any snow in the last 72 hours.

Mmmmm, Cheesecake Factory. I remember it fondly. And the leftovers, while standing over the dishwasher. ^_^

FOUR PARK CHALLEEEENGE - we deserved those cheesecakes after that!

One DOES expect warm weather in Florida!

Sucks about the weather! The U.S. seems to be having a cold spell this month. I hope you're enjoying yourself nonetheless.

IKR?!

Thanks. I've met a lot of friendly people so far. But it's strange to be at a conference where there are no death eaters or people wearing Hogwarts robes.

I was wondering how you managed to pack 5 complete costume changes in your tiny carry bag! No masks or wands or capes, right?

No masks or capes, at any rate. ;-)

I think it's colder there than it is here in Orlando. It was at least 50* today here. Also, I meant to say this when you first said you were heading to Tampa but: SO CLOSE YET SO FAR. I hope you enjoy your conference.

Yargh! Same state! :gazes northward:

I'm sure I'll be backing Orlando at some point. Gotta go to Hogsmeade for the butterbeer. :-D
