Thanks for all the lovely well wishes!

I am in Tampa and it's freeeeeezing. So much for getting away to someplace warm. I don't think it will go above 45F while I'm here.

I've met a couple of nice people and met one doctoral student whose interests overlap with mine. And apparently there is a Cheesecake Factory near my hotel so that might be my ( Read more... )

No, it turned out to be a session on ONE specific publicly available data set. And when I asked questions about teasing out sexual orientation from the data, the woman hemmed and hawed and said "there's a way, but only with the most recent data because the Feds wouldn't let them before" (It's the national longitudinal survey). This is why I want to apply to the Williams' Institute seminar on publicly available data sets. But they haven't released info on when that will happen again.

I did, however, meet someone today who told me the NCTE/NGLTF national transgender survey might soon see the light of day. I emailed my outside chair and right away she sent me a copy of the soon to be released study. But she hasn't heard anything about the data becoming available for public use. And I ran into a former colleague who teaches at the University I applied to and nearly got hired by a couple of months ago (if you recall?) and she has promised to sit down with me over tea and give me gossip. So, not an entirely useless day, but as these things go, not as useful in the way I'd hoped.

I'll be interested to hear your views on the survey- these things so often end up regurgitating 'what everbody knows'..........

If you need relaxation BTW, there's a nice piece of Max Bruch over on mine- based on the Kol Nidre and played by the incomparable Mischa Maisky :o)

Well it's a national longitudinal survey and something I may want to take a look at once I've finished my PhD. But yeah, as these things go the regurgitation of what we already know is the obvious point of entry for many.

I have just returned from a most triumphant day and shall have a listen to your post while I peruse my flist. Merci!
