Return of the King

As Master Samwise Gamgee said: "Well, I'm back." And I'm willing to eat my words.

Return of the King is NOT boring. Or confusing. Or depressing.

It's far better than The Two Towers. I'm not sure if it equals or surpasses Fellowship of the Ring. I have to think about that ( Read more... )

I was the exact opposite of you. I really wasn't very into Fellowship at all when I first saw it but adored Two Towers. I may be one of the only people to be drawn in by the characters in the second film rather than the first. When I went to rewatch Fellowship afterwards to give it another try, I found myself loving that one as well. I think there's a lot to be said for the fact that this is really all one long movie rather than three separate ones. Maybe if you rewatch all of it some day you'll find yourself understanding or appreciating things about the second that you didn't the first time around just as I found in the first. Because I realized that I wouldn't have loved Two Towers without the first one, which I now appreciate on its own merits as well.

You might be right. Someday when I have money, I'll buy all three on DvD and watch them on my computer over three nights.

I loved Fellowship, and really wished that I liked Two Towers more. I love the Rohirrim and the Ents, so it had that going, but all in all I found it a bit slow. I really wanted to like it more. But Return of the King is by far my favourite. I've only seen it once so far, and I definitely intend to see it again. I'm so glad to hear that you liked it.

Eee. Am going to see this tomorrow morning, and I absolutely cannot wait. I especially want to hear Pippin's song. *grin*

Though-- Sean Astin played Sam, Sean Bean was Boromir. It took me several readings through the cast list to get it straight, too. I think I only got it right once I'd seen Sean Bean in something else.

As for Sam, just look at my LJ--I've already done my own paean to Sam and the amazing Mr. Astin. I've never seen such deep love portrayed on film before. That was what made me cry.

I'm not sure why you changed your mind and decided to see the Return of the King, but I'm glad that you did and that you liked it. I was planning on seeing it anyway (after retail hell season is over) and there have been many glowing recommendations from both critics and friends, but your review is particularly appreciated because of your prior stance.

I'm a fan of both the books and the movies. I first read the trilogy in 1960s and have pretty much read them annually since. There are jarring moments for me in both The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers movies, and not because I'm a purist (I was fine with leaving out Tom Bombadil), but, ultimately, I found Jackson's vision and execution so compelling that I loved them anyway.

I can't tell you how much I'm looking for to seeing what everyone is saying is the best of the three movies.

Actually, I went to see it because when I was eating dinner tonight at Bertucci's, I heard someone say, "My God, haven't you seen it YET? Aren't you going to go see that movie?"

Those were the only two sentences I heard from other tables or booths all evening. I took that as an omen.

Plus, I was more than a little curious anyway, despite my many doubts.

I'm glad I went to see it. I really am.

Must see it again. Maybe Monday. Maybe later today. (Why isn't there a midnight showing of it??)
