[Bulma sighs as she walks towards the residential area where she has been told that her room is, her steps are heavy and tired. She's exhausted, emotionally rather than physically and her eyes are red from crying. They haven't swollen up yet but it won't take long, now that the last stamp was put and she got the stupid towel, the guide and ( Read more... )

You can't calculate it because there is no speed per say.

To move, S.S.Thor uses something called "Improbability Drive" [aaand he doesn't feel like typing out what that is, so he links her to this (first minute)]

There are no coordinates, everything is at random and its the driv4e that "chooses" were we will be ending up next.

So if I've understood it correctly it's basically a situation of: "we know where the door we're crossing is but we don't know where it leads", and it can lead from a few meters ahead to the other corner of the universe. Is that right?

If so, do you know if the drive is controlled as to when to happen or is it some sort of uncontrolled phenomena?

Exactly.

At the end of each month, S.S. Thor captains activate the drive and for a couple of days we'll be suffering from relatively safe and temporary side effects - these side effects vary a lot.

As consequence of using the ID, wormholes are created, although these are constantly happening through the whole month; they are also the ones that bring people to Thor.

That makes sense of some things, wormholes are also the ones to blame for people being from different timelines, right? Or so I've come to understand.

There isn't really a speed, and it would be harder than you think to locate your planet from here. Unless you have the right equipment. But judging from your question about the guide, I'm thinking not.

Anyway, welcome to the Thor! I'm the Doctor.

It's okay, it's not exactly my planet what I want to locate but another one. But being able to make an approximation at the position of the ship as it moves would make it easier for me, that's why I asked.

[The right equipment? Well, her company certainly allowed communication devices to fall into a state of "no-progress" as it focused in other things and she understands now how it was a mistake. However she's confident that she can overcome this, even if it won't be as perfect as she would like it to be.]

Thanks for the welcome anyway. Uhm, excuse me but do you mean that you're the doctor of the ship, as in medicine related, or is that actually your name?

You're welcome, and no, I'm not. It's more like a title. Or, more accurately, everyone calls me the Doctor. I call me the Doctor too.

[He's not trying to be confusing.]

[He's a bit confusing even if he doesn't try to, fortunately Bulma can understand it to a degree.]

Ah, I see. It's a pleasure to meet you then, Doctor. Uhm, talking about that, are there medical facilities here? I would hope so but I can also see us having bad enough luck to end stuck with none.

I like the Magic Diary.

"Magic Diary"? Is that how you call this device? I like how that sounds.

Well, that's pretty much what it is. A place where you can talk about all the stuff that happens...but then, it can also do cool things like let you talk to people and even look up stuff you don't know!

[She...kinda has a point]

[She does and Bulma can't help but giggle, not out of mockery or anything, more in agreement.]

That's true, you know, "Magic Diary" would be a cool product name for it. Pretty good for advertisement and the like, and more fun than just "Guide", I don't think many girls would really be interested in something with such a boring name.

We don't usually get a lot of information about the ship.

[Video] curiousgenius April 18 2011, 15:31:58 UTC
Is there some sort of information protection policy?

[Video] maraihi April 18 2011, 16:23:36 UTC
Protection policy? Not much of one. We still have cold-blooded killers wandering around.

I meant protection regarding the information... Though that about cold-blooded killers wandering around is more important. Do they really allow dangerous people in here as well?

[Curious. This...oddly blue haired woman seemed to be..well. Exceedingly intelligent. It was actually kind of reassuring.]

I may not have much, but I've been hacking into my Guide piece by piece, it's a tightly knit system, and is far more advanced than anything I've ever seen before. I can send you what I have discovered so far, if you'd like.

[She shakes her head.]
I can't, however, give you a speed estimate. As far as I've seen, what with mechanical objects being able to detect what you're craving to eat, then make it for you, for example, it is likely that the ship moves at a rate that cannot be determined.
The babelfish itself seems to run along these same lines, inexplicably.

[A slight smile.]
My name is Noin, it's nice to meet you Miss Brief.

[Well, Guy has already offered to show her what he has got himself but, without any offense to his discoveries, Bulma has always thought that it may take more than one view about something to study it properly. It's also kind of why she still hasn't ruled out the idea of studying it herself, at any rate, other people's views on the matter can't be something bad to have.]

I would certainly appreciate that. My world made the mistake of stopping considering ways to improve communication devices unfortunately, so I'm very curious about this Guide.

[Bulma sighs, definitively it seems she will have to go with the harder and less perfect route.]

I see, that's really unfortunate as it makes things harder, but I suppose it's worth the challenge. At least it seems we get some information about the planets we visit, right? That may still serve somehow.

Just Bulma is okay if you want, pleased to meet you too Miss Noin.

[A confirming nod.]
I agree.

[She doesn't wait any time and taps onto her own guide, sending the file over to Bulma's. Noin has done very careful hacking, as the Guide is an enormous resource here and she can't afford to take it completely apart. Every move has been carefully done and carefully logged so that she has the ability to look over it later and keep track of where and what has happened since then.]

I would hope so, though I admit, my studies of the stars hasn't come out this far - I have never seen these star patterns before.
[This is mildly more frustrating for her to admit, Noin was a fairly into star charts and the sea that was space. The fact that the Thor may just be that far out there...kind of blows her mind and also makes her wildly curious.]

Very well, Bulma. I look forward to interacting with you more.
[There's a salute, but it's more relaxed with two fingers more or less slightly tapping her temple.]

[Cool, now she has something to bury her nose in until she falls asleep from exhaustion rather than just cry until she falls asleep on her own. With just a glance she can already tell that this woman really knows what she's doing and is very methodical, that's great.]

Wow, this is awesome! I haven't seen many people keeping a log of their activities and studies as detailed as this. Thank you for sharing it!

Yeah, I've not seen them either, but it's reasonable knowing how big the universe is. I got to see very different star patterns when I traveled to a planet named Namek before. Still there should be information somewhere about the position of the planet we're over in in regards of the space, or its galaxy, somehow. That's how we found Namek at least.

[The trick is to find whom they should ask for that information.]
