I met the new dietician at my hospital appointment. she was very pleasent and it was a getting to know you meeting. When I explained that I was 20st 11 (US 2991pounds) in January of this year and when weighed right there, I was 18st 12 (US 2976 pounds) She said I was doing very well, considering I had arthitis and hypothyriosim which made exercise ( Read more... )

it really makes the world of difference when you have a professional who actually listens to you and understands that a person with reasonable/average health vs a person with chronic illnesses need VERY different treatment.

Yes one of the things I find most people in good health don't seem to understand is that if you are always tired or your limbs can't be relied on, it is almost impossible to exercise. That their solutions to dieting may trigger food intolerances that can lay you low for days if you're lucky. Vitamins and minerals don't have to be under the normal range before they start impacting on your health. It's a mine field and the best expert is yourself, if you are confident of taking on the resonsiblity. I believe I have no choice because I am the only one that really understands how it affects me.

You make some really interesting points that I hadn't considered about health before. It's funny, I was told by my doctor when I was losing weight before to eat a LOT of processed foods because I need the sodium to raise my really low blood pressure (like hospitals have assumed I was unconscious/dead before because it got so low and I couldn't get pain meds for a while until it went up. Yeah, that was a fun gallbladder attack...) but that always puzzled me because they also wanted me to LOSE weight, which I knew was counterproductive ( ... )

I have low blood pressure to, though not to the same level as yours. It was my low blood pressure when I am twice the weight I should be, that gave me the clue I was hypothyriodic. It wasn't my medical team that spotted it ( ... )

I was drinking diet soda myself and while I did so I was aware of the bad health effects it had, I just couldn't give it up and the same goes for fruit juice. I have though and this is the way I did it. I drink water with a fizzy vit tab in it. Usually vit C but sometimes vit B or even milk thistle. They do them in different flavours and I choose the cheaper ones so that I can have fizzy drinks throughout the day without over doing the vitamins. In cold weather like now, making it 3/4 of hot water is nice too. I can drink tea without sugar at all but I need sweetners in my coffee unless it's very milky. I rather it not that milky so I have reduced my need for sweetners down to one tab or teaspoon a cup. And I try to only have a few coffees a day. I'm not a natural tea drinker, I need the bite coffee has. So I have switched to Chai which is black Indian tea with spices. I'm having one now. This I can drink with a dash of milk or without ( ... )

Your dietician seems nicely clued up for a change - It's good to find someone like that who actually listens and doesn't make unfounded assumptions about your eating habits.

Shame about the sub-optimal conditions at the swimming pool - the one I used to go to (and hope to again soon) has a sort of chair lift arrangement to help people with mobility problems get in and out of the pool. It's rather slow and laborious, but at least it avoids the walking unsupported on slippery tiles part of the process. Any chance of your local pool installing something similar, do you think?

I don't think they will be installing a chair lift anytime soon. I hope they do though.

just fyi, i think your stone to pound conversions each have an extra 9 in them. it should be 291 pounds instead of 2991.

i'm glad you found a dietitian who is willing to listen to you and work with you instead of dish out worthless inappropriate and unhelpful blather.

i too am sorry your pool is so ill equipped. i find swimming to be one of the few exercises i can participate in that doesnt lay me up for days afterwords. but yeah, the pool i go to isnt much better than what you've described.

I was kind of confused as to how you could weigh over 2,000 pounds.
