Cooling

Thanks to shehasathree I'm reading about Arctic Heat cooling vests. Heat-intolerant people, eg many disabled people, don't find hot weather 'gorgeous' or 'lovely' - we find it horrible. I use wet clothing, swimwear and electric fans to keep me cool in hot weather.

Here in Britain our weather's cool now, but friendly_crips is international so here goes. Google tells me the ( Read more... )

I haven't tried the vests myself, but I know some people who have to be up and about during Australian summers do find them useful. The cooling blanket doubles as a weighted blanket = perfect for my particular sensory needs, but as always, ymmv.

In case I wasn't the only person confused by 'ymmv' here's what the Urban Dictionary says http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=ymmv

*blush* Thanks. :)

Sometimes i forget that not everyone shares my obsession with internet linguistics and knowledge of terminology.
Not that i can keep up with the 'kids these days', myself. I was reading a story a little while back, and the author kept using "[y/n]", but from the context it clearly wasn't being used to mean "yes/no". It was ...very confusing. Turns out it's a thing for "your name". Hah! /o\

That's bloody ridiculous! If somebody invented 'yn' as a slang abbreviation, that'd be fine, but '[y/n]' adds a whole lot of unnecessary punctuation. OMG WTF ;-)

i have not used them, but i have researched them and seriously considered them. one of my medications causes me to have overheat very easily and i have continuous problems with dehydration because of this. but they're expensive and i dont know anyone who has used one personally. i'm reluctant to drop the money on something i dont know if it will work.

A lot of people in the Australian EDS and POTS groups i belong to on facebook have used them. (I know that's not the same as a personal recommendation or knowing it will work; but i thought it might nevertheless be useful data.)

I've been thinking about them. I can't control my temperature and heat makes my blood pressure/POTS issues worse and the brain fog is debilitating, well, more so than usual and it's usually pretty shit.
Unfortunately I can't afford to move and the place we live, while being cooler than the coast, doesn't allow us to have an air conditioner.
Ice packs, crappy standing fans and laying on the floor are my current options for dealing with Australian summer.

Laying on the floor? Is that because hot air rises?

It's more the fact that with low blood pressure your bran doesn't get enough oxygen and laying on the floor means it doesn't have to fight gravity. I don't have a TV or anything in the bedroom so the bed is out if I want to do anything.
