After much deliberation, I finally decided on the following menu for Thanksgiving, which will hopefully not take too long and leave me plenty of time for studying. My husband and I love Indian food, so I tried to fuse those flavors with the traditional Thanksgiving feast ( Read more... )

chicken, turkey, potatoes, chutneys, sweet potatoes, thanksgiving, indian, gravy

How did you grill a whole turkey? I'm intrigued... I have a gas grill, I wonder if that would work...

my mom taught me a trick that helps the gravy from getting lumpy... mix the flour and milk in an air tight container. just shake it all up. if you still have lumps just strain it when you're done..

for roasted sweet potatoes but sugar on them maybe? i think that would make they carmelize

Thanks for the tip!

Yeah, I was thinking butter + brown sugar for the sweet potatoes, but I wondered if anyone had any other suggestions / cooking technique advice.

just don't ruin them with marshmellows! you're going to use fresh ones right?

there's a couple good chutneys in the moosewood cookbooks. I like this one, http://www.molliekatzen.com/recipes/recipe.php?recipe=apricot_chutney
but i've also had good luck with the date/orange chutney, and moderate luck with apple one.

will you be using a specific recipe for the mashed potatoes?

Thanks! I keep meaning to buy a Moosewood book.

I don't have a specific recipe for mashed potatoes, actually. I just thought a tad bit of spice would be nice. Any thoughts?

For the sweet potatoes, I do something similar to this.

I was actually looking at this recipe before. Glad to know someone has tried it (or something like it) and that it turned out well! :-)

I made this recently. Although your husband likes canned cranberry sauce, this might be a nice way to try both and compare. And it's very easy - just combine and cook. Keeps at least a couple of weeks in the fridge, if you don't want to can it ( ... )

That sounds perfect, thanks! I bet I could make this a few days in advance, too, which would save me some time. :)

I think chutneys really improve on standing a few days, so go ahead and make it this weekend...it'll keep nicely. I have some in a glass dish in the fridge with saran wrap on it, and it's kept fine for mroe than a week.
