I'm so excited about the Japanese drama version, I improv'ed some Hua Yang fic. :D
going out, being in
hua yang shao nian shao nu (hana kimi twdrama), xiu yi/rui xi (implied rui xi/quan), pg, ~850 words, for
happiestwhen who asked for the pairing and first dates, attempted kisses, bad pop music and Senior Nan, all who appear in this fic. I don't own Hana Kimi characters. This takes place in an universe where Julia magically does not exist, because Emily wanted that. Oh, and since this is from XY's point of view, I refer to Rui Xi as 'he'.
Xiu Yi was happy, ecstatic almost. He was on a date with his boyfriend, or to-be-boyfriend, or at least would-be-boyfriend-by-the-end-of-this-date, Rui Xi.
Rui Xi was however less than comfortable. “Xiu Yi, stop putting your arm around me as if I were a girl. Which I'm not. People will think we're more than friends.”
“I can't help it if they see the truth, Rui Xi,” he said, smiling widely. When Rui Xi wiggled out of his hold, he frowned a little. “Fine, fine, just friends for tonight.”
“Maybe we should call Quan one more time to make sure he drinks enough liquids. His fever was very high when he left,” Rui Xi pondered, fiddling with his phone.
They had supposed to have gone to the movies just the three of them but Quan had fallen ill. Rui Xi had wanted to cancel but seeing as how they were all in need of a break after a long line of exams, Quan had insisted they go without him and enjoy themselves for one evening.
“He was recovering well when we left. When I asked if I should call Mei Tian to take his temperature, he said he was totally fine.”
Rui Xi frowned and muttered something unintelligible about Mei Tian. Xiu Yi took the opportunity to slip his arm around him once again.
“Come on. Tonight's our night.” He smiled and Rui Xi finally smiled back. Xiu Yi's insides warmed up.
“Okay. But why are we going to see Rainie's lesbian movie, just because you're a comrade nowadays...”
“It was either that or some Japanese movie where a girl disguises herself a guy and enters an all-boys' school. How believable is that?”
He laughed and Rui Xi laughed even harder.

“Meh,” Rui Xi said.
“Is there something wrong with the popcorn?” Xiu Yi asked worriedly. He had an odd feeling before they'd entered the movie theater that he should've bought the peanuts instead. He had felt an odd chill going down his spine, but this could just be living with Da Shu for a long period of time. He was paranoid about absolutely everything sometimes.
“They keep playing the same pop songs they play at Ying Kai cafeteria.” Rui Xi ate more popcorn and stared at the empty screen. “Maybe I should call Quan before the movie starts.”
Before Xiu Yi had a chance to say no, they heard a loud female giggle from behind them, followed by a familiar male chuckle. Xiu Yi glanced over his shoulder. So there was an evil spirit in the theater after all.
“Senior Nan!” Rui Xi piped up next to him. “Are you on a date here?”
Senior Nan was a bit thrown off but gathered his cool and responded. “Yes.” His eyes moved over Xiu Yi and then back to Rui Xi. “Are you on a date, as well?”
“No,” Rui Xi said.
“Yes,” Xiu Yi said at the same time. Rui Xi hit his arm.
The girl next to Senior Nan giggled again and Xiu Yi glared at her. She was cute but not as cute as Rui Xi would be, if he was a girl.
If. Which he isn't. Which is a good thing because otherwise what sort of a gay would Xiu Yi be anyway.
The lights turned off and the movie began. Then it continued, and went on, and Xiu Yi found his attention slipping. He hadn't had any idea that the movie would be so ...artistic. He glanced at Rui Xi at his side. He was nodding off. Xiu Yi moved his arm subtly to place it around Rui Xi's shoulders but his movement woke up the other boy.
A couple of moments later, Rui Xi was nodding off again. His head dipped, landed on Xiu Yi's shoulder. A bolt of lightning ran through Xiu Yi's body and into his brain. He placed a hand to touch Rui Xi's cheek, settling his head onto Xiu Yi's shoulder.
The movie continued, and ended, and he didn't dare wake up Rui Xi. He heard Senior Nan's snort behind him, but ignored it, and it was the best non-date-date he had ever been on. Eventually Rui Xi woke up and they exited the theater.
“Was that enough supporting comrades for one month, Xiu Yi?” Rui Xi asked outside, yawning against his cell phone.
“Yes,” Xiu Yi said and his knuckles brushed against Rui Xi's hand but he didn't make a move to hold hands.
They called Quan, who was sleeping already. Rui Xi seemed happy. “He'll be well tomorrow.”
Xiu Yi just nodded.

At the dormitories, their date (non-date) ended with a hug.
“Thank you, Xiu Yi,” Rui Xi said. “This was fun.”
Xiu Yi smiles. It was a disaster but Rui Xi's too nice to admit it, and that's okay. He's okay just being the friend. Just the friend.
When the door has closed and Rui Xi's gone, he makes a gesture to grasp the air before him.
Maybe not so okay.

SO MUCH PRONOUN AWKWARDNESS I KNOW. Sorry. I found it so difficult to work out. :/
