Thanks to my glorious graphic novels class, I get to dress up twice for Halloween! We decided that if any class has a right to dress up, it's us, so we're going to do so Monday. Then of course Tuesday is The Day, and since it is J's absolute most favoritest holiday ever, there shall be costumage then as well. Whee ( Read more... )

Really? And here I was reading it thinking you might "get it" better than me, or at least get something more out of it. Maybe it's one of those horrible things that you Must Read because it is A Classic of the Genre/Form/whatever, but no one actually likes. And if you dare speak ill of it, you're just not intellectual enough to understand the wonderful depth and imagination of such great art. Luckily, I'm old enough (compared to the other students) to just say it sucks and hang the consequences.

Hi! ::waves:: alto2 sent me over because she knows I'm becoming a big comic book nerd-girl and she told me you were taking a class on graphic novels. She and I have been "enabling" each other in our fannish habits in comic book shops recently. I started reading the Sandman series this summer and I've been looking for other things to read. I've been reading The Eternals and Casanova, and liking both. I put Jimmy Corrigan on my list, but maybe I won't bother. I'm really quite a newbie. Anything else you might recommend?

Hey! I think I've seen you around LJ - probably some geeky comms or flists. Anyway, I'm kind of a newbie myself, but I'll try. The one thing from this class that I really enjoyed all the way through was Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud, which we read first. It is quite illuminating about comics and art in general. Strongly recommended. I also liked Batman: The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller. I never was a bat-fan before, but I see why it's considered a classic and got much more out of it than some of the later things we've read. Also, it gave me an excuse to watch a Christian Bale movie. ;)

Joss Whedon's Fray is really good (miladygrey makes a good argument that it connects "Buffy" and "Firefly"), and Astonishing X-Men has been good so far. The latter seems to be love-it-or-hate-it with hardcore fans, but I'm liking it, and it is pretty easy to understand for those not familiar with the fandom past the movie-verse. Serenity: Those Left Behind is a bridge between the series and the movie. (With the advantage of being short, if you're ( ... )
