“Hey.”
“Hey…. Can I come in?” Ryan asked.
“Sure.” Greg let him in and closed the door. “Ryan, right? We didn’t really introduce ourselves at the lab.”
“And you’re Greg. I wheedled that from Calleigh.”
“How did you know where I live?”
“I saw your car in front of the lab when you and Eric came back from lunch. I checked the DMV records.”
“I’m not sure if that’s legal…. Coffee?”
“What?”
“You want coffee? I just got back from work, I was gonna make some.”
“No thanks. I didn’t come here for coffee.”
“So why did you come here?” Greg went to kitchen and started to pour water to the coffee maker.
“I’m not sure how to say this….”
“Just say it.”
“Me and Eric…. We have a long history together. A lot of it isn’t that good, but it’s history anyway. And at some point we will get back together.” He paused. “I just wanted to warn you. Don’t get your hopes up.”
Greg snapped the coffee maker on and turned to face Ryan.
“Normally, I would first ask if your on some kinda medication that makes you hallucinate. But you and Eric broke up pretty recently, so I’ll let it go.”
“I don’t need pity from you, I just need you to back off.”
“There’s always two sides in a break-up, and the last time I heard, Eric had no intention to come back to you. You two broke up and you found a new guy, so obviously it wasn’t that serious for you. If you two had been together I would never had made a move but you’re not and Eric’s fair game.”
“He told you about that?”
“Yeah. Can I be totally honest with you?”
“Go ahead.”
“I don’t know you, and you’re probably a nice guy, but I’m not gonna make my decisions based on your “warnings”. You want my warning? Focus on your own life and leave mine and Eric’s alone or you’ll end up alone.”
They were interrupted by the doorbell. Greg went to open the door and a familiar man pushed his way in.
“Nick? What the hell are you doing here?” Greg stared at him and wasn’t sure if he should be stunned or angry.
“I came to take you home. Please just listen to me.” Nick paused when he spotted the man in the kitchen. He stared at Ryan and Ryan stared at him. Greg’s eyes bounced from one man to the other and back again. Then the realisation dawned on him.
“I can’t believe this….!” Greg exclaimed. He took few steps closer to Ryan and gave him a long look. “You’re unbelievable. First you destroy my relationship and then you come here and ask me to stay away from yours.”
“I didn’t know….” Ryan stammered. He was still too stunned to think coherently.
“Well, you know now. Both of you, out.”
“Greg-” Nick tried to sooth him.
“No. Out. Right now.”
“Gr-”
“Out!” Greg screamed as loud as he could.
Nick and Ryan backed slowly to the door. Greg followed and slammed to door shut.
------------------------------------------
“You’re late.” Eric informed when Greg walked into the café. “Long day?”
“And it’s not even over yet.” Greg slouched down on the chair. “We need to talk.”
“Okay.”
“About your ex.”
“Ryan?”
“He showed up on my apartment.”
“Sorry.”
“That wasn’t the worst part. Remember what I said about that two-faced, slutty CSI who Nick slept with?”
“Yeah, you said they met in that seminar we had here in Miami.”
“And?”
“And what?”
“And he was called Ryan. Ring any bells?”
Eric looked at him like had gone mad. “It can’t be-”
“It can and it was. They just had a nice reunion in my place. First your Ryan showed up, then Nick.”
“I….” For once Eric seemed to be speechless. “I had no idea. You know that, don’t you? I didn’t know that.”
“Of course I know that.” Greg leaned back and rubbed his palms over his face. “I left Vegas to leave the whole Nick-fiasco behind me. I come here and it just follows me.”
Eric’s eyes were fixed on his coffee. “Now that you know…. Does it change anything?”
Greg peeked between his fingers and then dropped his hands down. “You mean between us?”
“Yeah.”
“No. What about you?”
“No.” Eric downed the rest of his coffee and tossed the cup to the bin. “Are you hungry?”
“I could eat something.”
“What do you feel like? Tortillas? There’s a great Cuban place couple blocks from here.”
“Do you get some kinda heritage discount?”
“Are you calling me a stingy date?” Eric tried to look insulted, but he didn’t succeed.
“I’ll tell you after the meal.”
