“Sure. I thought you were gonna leave for lunch.”
“Well, I’m still waiting for Alexx.” She paused. “I haven’t talked to you or Eric about this, because it’s not my business, but…. What’s going on?”
“I don’t know what you mean.”
“You know very well what I mean. I haven’t seen you too fighting like that over every little thing since you started here.”
“We’re no longer together. That’s all you need to know.”
“Okay, but you can’t let it affect your job. I know Eric can be a real pain sometimes, and he can really provoke even those who like him, but at least try. Be the bigger man.”
“I’m trying, but he’s pushing my buttons, and….. This is even worse then it was when I came here.”
-----------------------------------------------
Eric parked his car and pulled his ringing cell phone from his pocket.
“Delko.”
“Hey, it’s me.” Calleigh greeted. “I wanted to talk to you after the shift, but you were already gone.”
“Yeah, I’m gonna get something to eat and go home.”
“Do you have any plans for tonight?”
“Is that an offer?”
“Offer for a chat between friends. You and Ryan can’t keep acting like this.”
“Cal, I really don’t wanna talk about it.”
“I know, but people are effecting your work and the whole lab is like a war zone. It’s not just you two, it effects everyone.”
He sighed. “We can talk about it tomorrow.”
“Promise?”
“I promise. I just want to eat and then get some sleep. I had a hell of a day.”
“Okay, I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Bye.”
“Bye.”
Eric hung up and marched inside the café. He ordered a coffee and a sandwich and turned to scan the space for a free table. Or that was what he meant to do. He turned around and knocked another customers arm, sending his coffee flying all over the guys shirt.
“Sorry, I didn’t see you.” Eric grabbed some napkins from the counter and offered them to him. The guy tried to dry the hot spot on his T-shirt, and then raised his head to meet Eric’s eyes.
“It’s all right, I was gonna throw this to the laundry anyway. I’ve been hauling moving boxes all day, so it was grimy already.”
Eric let the guy babble and took a good look at him. Blond hair that seemd to go to every possible direction. Couple interesting moles on the cheek. Big, chocolaty brown eyes.
“-so I had to pull it to pieces and take it in one part at a time.”
“What?” Eric snapped back to reality.
“My bed.”
“Your bed?”
“You didn’t hear a word, did you?” The guy chuckled and flashed an enviable line of white teeth. He offered his hand to Eric. “Greg.”
“Eric. Why were you talking about your bed?”
“Well…. I started from moving and it kinda started branching. Are you local?”
“Yeah.”
“Great, I got a question for you.” Greg gestured Eric to follow him to his table. He took a magazine and pointed to a nightclub add. “Is this place any good?”
“Mona? That depends….”
“On what?”
“What you’re looking for.” Eric grinned. “Do you wanna be seen or just party?”
“Party.”
“Are you a one hour guy or can you keep going till the last call?”
“I’ve been on a dry-dock for a while, but trust me. I can go all night.”
“My kinda man.” Eric chuckled. “What did you mean, on a dry-dock?”
Greg groaned. “Unlucky relationship, bad break-up, new job, moving…. Long story.”
Eric took a minute to consider. Then he sat down on the opposite side of the table.
“I got time.”
-----------------------------------------------
“Eric?” Calleigh stepped into the workspace and gave Eric a small smile.
“Morning, Call.”
“What’s going on with you?”
“What do you mean?”
“That smile. I know that look. You and Ryan worked things out.”
The smile vanished. “No.”
“Then what?”
“Nothing really.”
“You’re not fooling me, so spit it out.”
“I met somebody yesterday.”
“Oh…”
“Don’t start, it wasn’t anything like that. We just talked.”
“You met a guy, you didn’t sleep with him and now you have that sappy smile on your face?”
“It was nice to talk about stuff with somebody, who doesn’t know you and doesn’t judge you.”
“So, who was it?”
“Greg.”
“Greg what?”
“I don’t know.”
“You talk to him about your life and you don’t even know his name?”
“He doesn’t know my last name either. I spilled coffee on him and we started talking.”
“And you didn’t try….”
“No! Is that really so hard to believe?”
“Yes! Was he cute?”
“Cal….”
“Was he?”
“Yeah.”
“And you didn’t…..”
“No!” Eric chuckled. “But I got his number, so….”
“Are you going to call him?”
“I don’t know. He just broke up from somebody and my situation is what it is.”
“Well, it’s always good to have people you can talk to.” Calleigh smiled. “And if that guy can make you go from broody to sunny, he must be quite a guy.” He gave him a small wave and left.
Eric pulled a small piece of paper from his pocket. He took his cell phone and dialled the number.
