Been reading some of the Sherlock Holmes stories and they're great fun.  It felt wrong fangirling the movie without having ever read the books.  Literary temerity; I has it.  I've even come across some lines that are directly quoted in the movie.  Most of them are great fun at least, some have these looong boring setups with Holmes not doing much

When a movie is based off of a book I'm usually the person watching to judge what's wrong and compare the adaptation and whatnot. This time I was all "Squee! Robert Downey Jr.'s abs! Explosions! Cool scenery! ...Maybe I should read some of these."

Nobody told you those things because it'd be like saying, "oh, look, the sky is blue" or "oh, look, JPad is a ginormous freak of nature". You know, basic things that everyone knows already. ;)

In any case, glad you enjoyed the stories! I haven't read them in ages. Maybe I should re-read some before I see it.

I guess I only saw parodies where Holmes is with the derby cap and pipe and magnifying glass and Watson is the short fat bumbling sidekick. They're cool though!
