So the Leverage crew didn't have any kids visiting this weekend. They had managed - somehow - to get a note through the portal, folded into the most intricate paper airplane Eliot had ever seen, assuring them that Spike and Ada were both just fine, but were simply far too busy to visit this year. Eliot had decided that the island was taking it

If they were going to insist on calling him that, he was going to grandpa the hell up. He was pretty sure that meant spoiling the kids with sugar and then siccing them back on their parents.

"Waffles," Sarah said decisively at the same time Eva suggested, "Pancakes?"
Another shared glance, a quick smile, and then they added, "With strawberries and cream please."
"Lots!"
"Please?"

Sure, they'd just had ice cream for breakfast yesterday too, but days spent with Grandpa and Uncle Hardison and Aunt Parker didn't count.
"Grandpa can I have waffles and strawberries and ice cream and pancakes and whipped cream? Please?"

He deliberately got that wrong, yes. He wouldn't get their names right yet, but Eliot didn't mistake orders for food. He just wasn't above getting some trolling in in return.
He smiled at Carys. "Let's start out with one of those things, alright? Then if you're still hungry we can do the next one."
He put the twins' orders in with the kitchen then turned back to the three girls. "Right, so." He wasn't sure how to ask this. "You three actually recognize me as, uh. 'Grandpa'? Or did your mom just tell you about me?"
It was half 'am I still alive in your world' and half 'are you even from a world where Kathy's mine'. He was almost afraid of any answer they might give.

"Well. I don't know if she's told you much about this island, but it's very . . . silly. Sometimes kids show up here and find out they have whole new brothers and sisters they never knew about. So a new - 'grandpa' -" It definitely helped to put quotes around that word, even mentally. "- isn't that weird, is it?"

"No, I wanted French toast," Sarah declared. "And I wanted eggs. And bacon," Eva agreed. They were both grinning at him again; joking around with Granddad was part of their relationship. "And we know you. And Aunt Parker. And Uncle Hardison." They nodded towards where he was still giggling in the booth.
"Aunt Parker gave me these earrings," Eva said, brushing her white hair behind her ears. The diamond chips in the white-gold setting could easily be exchanged for a car.
"My necklace is back home," Sarah said. "I know not to wear expensive jewelry while jumping through strange portals."

The cook rang the bell to indicate the pancakes and waffles order was ready, and Eliot grabbed the plates. "Right, which one of you ordered the full English, and who got the kimchi sausage roll?" he asked, even as he set the plates in front of the right twin.
Who were going to be known as "Pancake Era" and "Waffle Era" now in his head.

"Please?"
Even Carys piped up. "Me too? We don't get to have it much at home." It was one of her mommy's favorite foods, so Carys liked it even if she thought it tasted funny. And now she had extra reason to like it if her sisters did.

Because spoiling grandkids didn't mean food waste, dammit.

"Oh my gosh, if you invent kimchi sausage, you'd be the best granddad in the world," Sarah said, cutting her waffles in half and dumping them on Eva's plate.
"Like, moreso than now," Eva added a second later, doing the same with her pancakes.
And then they both spooned some of their strawberries and cream onto Carys' plate, who beamed up at them with pure hero-worship.

"I don't know if Mom would like us to have superhero names," Eva said quietly to Carys.
"This should probably be a secret name just between us and Grandpa, you know?" Sarah added. "Sister-secrets are the best kind anyway."
"Trust us, we have lots!"
