The Valley Campfire: Monday Afternoon

Jul 13, 2009 12:39

Layla yawned and stretched as she exited her alcove after five days of being a leather bound set of encyclopedias. She still felt a bit fuzzy and stiff for some strange reason. It wasn't as if she had actually spent the week in bed but she still felt like she had ( Read more... )

Raven passed by the Valley campfire as she returned from classes to the campsite. She paused, looking curiously at Layla, or rather, what she was cooking. It did not smell of animal flesh, which she did not eat, but it looked like the meat she had seen some of the other students cooking over the fires. "Hello," she said. "May I ask what you are eating?"

Azarath didn't have tofu, you see.

"Tofu dog," she said cheerfully. "Want one? I got some extra sticks here if you want to roast one up."

"Tofu?" Raven repeated the strange word. "It is not meat? I do not eat animal flesh."

"No meat," Layla assured her. "It's coagulated soy milk that's been processed into different forms. This one has been made into something that tastes similar to a hot dog. But not quite."

After her class, Tara roamed back toward her cabin and settled on a rock, near the flames, mostly just to think.

And then she realized she was being weird and hadn't seen her cabinmate for a couple days. "Layla. Hey. Did you go home or something?"

"Hey Tara," Layla said with a wave. "Nope. I spent the last five days as a set of encyclopedias. You seem pretty deep in thought. Everything okay?"

Tara nodded. "Yeah. It's fine. Just ... putting things together, you know?"

She shrugged. "How were you encyclopedias?"

"I turned into a set of them," Layla replied, "Which isn't uncommon around here. Most people tend to turn into animals but apparently the island has a sense of humor."

Francine was lured near by the smell of roasting... something that wasn't meat but still smelled like food. That she didn't have to cook. She wasn't big on cooking this week.

The moment of silent staring wasn't for the tofu dogs, once she realized what they were. It was for Firekeeper with blonde hair and no Blind Seer.

"...Firekeeper?"

Tara waved -- a waggle of a few fingers, really. "Hi. Y-you don't live here."

Which came out way less friendly than she meant it -- mostly, she was trying to remember why the girl looked familiar and couldn't -- and so she was going to look kind of like she wanted to die. "That sounded way less mean in my head."

Francine had to laugh at that, despite the blue funk that hadn't worn away over the weekend. "No, I'm in Smile Time. Or if you're my roomie, Cheerful Bouncy Hell. You're..." it took her a second to match the face to the she'd written down. "Tara, right? From the magic reserves? I'm Francine."

"Tara," Tara agreed, with a bobbing nod. She was pleased the girl was laughing, and not in what seemed like a mean way. "And that's why you looked familiar. You were with Merlin."

Lugging around her laptop again, Valentine wasn't quite sure what she wanted to do with herself after her class today, but she did know she wanted to distract herself from it. The topic was one that left her a little bitter, and she didn't want to sulk. Seeing some activity around a campfire, she drifted over, taking a seat, and giving the customary wave around to everyone.

"Hi Val," Layla said with a wave. "Tofu dog?"

"It's edible, right?" Valentine asked with a faint grin.

"Edible," Layla smirked. "Though not quite an actual hot dog."

Funny how spending time as a human had left Robin's banjo out of tune. After fixing that, Robin went looking for people to hang out with, the instrument slung across his back.

"Hi Layla, how was your weekend?"

"I was a bunch of books," Layla said with a shrug. "And yours?"

"My banjo turned human. Were you aware when you were books?"

"No. Not really," Layla said. "I was just a book."
