She looks very simple with her tiny baby on her hip; her dress is simple, her hair is simple. It's good to be up after the laying-in, although that was a few months ago, and she's a sturdy small girl, so it didn't take too long to recover--but good, all the same, now that the child's a little older, to get out of her room more often.

As she ought, as any young married woman ought, Hero is sewing demurely in her room. It's only proper (and perhaps a little necessary), and anyone might find her there.

Although Hero much, much prefers the warm weather, the snow is still utterly enchanting. She's standing outside on the Mansion's front steps, just standing, and letting it fall on her hair.

Hero knows well she's been forbidden from speaking to Gareth, but her husband never told her she can't look at him. She's fond of him, she wants to make sure he's well--all of which explains why the figure of a girl dressed in very virginal white is moving between the trees near the Orkney cottage. With her fears laid to rest by Don John and Gawain, Hero is ready to be excited about her upcoming marriage. As such, she now has people to tell, requests to make, clothes to find--she is busily seeking out the persons who can help.

And then there's confusing the issue further.

Now she's trying to be industrious (as a maiden should), and sewing peacefully in the gardens. She looks more innocent now than ever.

Every young girl about to be married and not sure of whether or not she ought to needs more to be confused about--that goes without saying.

Hero, at least, is happy to-day (she can never be sad long), gathering flowers from one of the lawns and letting the sun stray in her hair.

Hero follows her lord back to his rooms, weeping quietly from fear and from horror and from shame; when they arrive she stands awkward and unsure. She's dishonoured him and she shouldn't even be with him now, she shouldn't dare to be in his presence, and she keeps her eyes to the ground.
