sighnotso, but let them go--

May 27, 2008 23:08

Hero is sitting on the steps of the porch of the Mansion, her baby clasped tight in her arms, and sobbing. The man her mistress loves is dead, and she's not half so upset about that--although she is enormously upset at death--as she is that her mistress is bereaved. It is so terrible. The Lady was so calm and stern while they buried him, and afterwards after Hero changed her nightdress for her and took the bloodstained one away--so composed, but Hero remembers her screaming when the gentleman was still barely alive. She does not know what to do.

Her tears are dribbling on Leonato's head as he suckles, quiet and solemn as his father, making no response to his mother's distress.
