I've known about the link between strep and rheumatic fever (and also rheumatoid arthritis) for a long time (first heard about it in 1974). Apparently, certain variations of streptococcus appear sufficiently similar to certain normal human cells that too many strep infections can get the immune system overhyped to the point that the immune system starts going after heart cells (rheumatic fever) or joint cells (rheumatoid arthritis).

We're as certain as anyone can be that this is how my sister came down with RA.

I will be keeping a close eye on this. Considering that the only thing that was identified when Gosling#2 was so critically sick was strep, if I can get him vaccinated, I'm right there. And that is thew only thing he seems susceptible to - he's always getting strep. Now I will panic whenever he comes down with it.

dont panic. but DO start a policy of taking him to the doctors at the very first symptoms, and alert the doctor "my child is very susceptible to strep"

my mom did that, so even when i was out of town and in "new doctor territory" mom would take me to a doctor and the first words were "test for strep, she gets it all the time"

Himself is very good about going to the doctor. This last instance totally surprised us - not throat pain at all earlier in the day, then 'poof' 103 fever and run to hospital. He knows about his tendency and usually stays on top of it.

My mom always made them test me for strep, as well. I had good health and dental care as a child, since my mom was on Welfare. They made it a priority that I had glasses when I needed them.

*wish I could say that now* Last Christmas was a wake-up call for me. I know that I need to take better care of myself, yet I continue to downplay my health problems. I think a lot of parents do that, you know? I try to nurse everyone else back to health, but I cannot "allow" myself to get sick or let others take care of me when I eventually get sick.

I had strep 11 times in one year and am still very susceptable to it.

I would LOVE a vaccine.

My uncle developed rheumatic fever, and it weakened his heart, thus contributing to his death. (He'd had a heart attack while crossing the street and was hit by a car.)This is something that I am concerned about with my most recent illness.
I've had chronic sore throats since I was a child. A tonsillectomy was suggested to deal with my cryptic tonsils, but at the time I was pregnant. Then last year, I sustained damage to my hearing from an untreated illness, which most likely was strep-related. Since then, I've had occasional bouts of vertigo and almost daily of tinnitus.

have your doctor check and see if your sinus passages are still clogged.... doctors assume they "cant be" after a certain amount of time, but i found they can.. you may need to go on prescription meds to clear out your ears.

on the less intense side.... flonase and sudafed, combined with echinacea and goldenseal.. and investigate a "neti pot" they run warm salted water through your sinuses to clean them out.. icky, but it works.

thanks for the info...
I'm used to doctors not taking my symptoms seriously, so I began studying herbology, medical transcription and first aid on my own. (This came in handy when my daughter began having seizures and developed the dairy allergy.) I prefer homeopathic remedies, since I have many drug allergies, but they are a bit harder to regulate.

I do have some Meclazine in case the vertigo strikes, though, which has been the only thing to help the tinnitus.

look into ... herb. ummm. name.. eulethro? its in celestial seasonings tension tamer, but is good for lungs and ears..
and definetly look into a neti pot, and the echinacea/goldenseal.

Flonase usually needs a script, but its pretty safe, worse thing it does to me is dry out my nose and start nosebleeds. i understand some folks get blood pressure issues from it, however.

neti pots are safe, when in doubt use plain water.. i had it advised to use salted water. and keep the pot CLEAN, no point in pouring mold up your nose!

you may wish to try steaming your sinuses. i use "Swiss Kriss" which is an herbal laxative, but i ONLY use it for steaming my pores and nose. one to two tablespoons in a pot of boiling water.. add towel.

i found that taking regular doses of the "good bacteria" capsules... keeps that yeast infection thing in check. it also seemed to cut down on the ear problems a little. only get the ones that have to be kept refrigerated, unless you really know and trust the brand.

yeah my doctors rarely listen, you should have seen the hoops i had to jump through to get my chicken pox vaccine.
