Chapter 2 ☆ [Voice/Written]

Oct 18, 2011 18:54

[This particular entry starts off as nothing more than carefully written, easily legible text. After a few moments, the voiced part starts - it's the text being read out in a calm, friendly voice, for any who might have trouble reading what's written.]

I was wondering... How many of you have dealt with the inability to remember something important ( Read more... )

[And of course he would have tried to hack a filter you made, Joshua. Because not-brother wants to keep an eye on you.

But anyway, he's in an odd mood to test Joshua here, so he's going to obscure the camera on the journal and disguise his handwriting so it looks very different from any other handwriting he's used on the journals before. Have fun guessing who this is.]

I know someone else who was affected.

[Hm... an anonymous response, huh. The handwriting doesn't look familiar, either...]

Do you mind explaining how they were affected? [He's admittedly pretty curious, since the original question was fairly broad, but he's not going to make this person explain if they don't want to.]

[Like you'd know his handwriting normally, Joshua. He's not exactly revealed it to you yet.]

I've known a few actually. Sometimes they do not recall some events, and other times it can be years worth of loss.

[No, he hasn't, but there is that small chance that he's seen the handwriting on the journals at some point. Alas, that's not the case this time.]

That's what I've seen, too. Normally, they only forget a certain short period of time, but sometimes it's several years. [Someone like that responded to this entry, after all.

... ] Do you know why these people lost their memories? [Considering how much the cause can vary... it's a question worth asking.]

More than just something. I lost at least ten years worth of memories.

[Coming from a teenage boy, this doesn't sound very pleasant.]

[Ten years? That's... a lot, especially for someone who's probably around his age, judging from his voice.

...]

I'm sorry to hear that. [He sounds completely honest as he says that. To some extent, he can relate to Ven's situation, after all.]

Do you know why you lost these memories? [Losing such a large portion of one's memory isn't exactly an everyday occurrence... and in some cases, there might be a way to regain those memories.]

I do now, but it's kinda complicated.

[And would probably confuse people from other worlds; it already has.]

I don't mind because I've made so many new memories, but it's still a lot of memories just... gone.

It's fine if you don't explain it. [He is curious, and it all being complicated wouldn't bother him much, but he's not going to pry if Ven would rather not explain.]

I think I understand. It's good to make new memories, but forgetting so much has to be difficult. [At least if you're aware of that fact. When you don't suspect anything, it's not too bad, but when you start to realize just how much you forgot - and that you might be hurting others as a result - it's... well, it's a lot harder to deal with at that point.]

Back home, me and my friends once completely forgot about another good friend of ours. Or rather...we thought he was someone different than who he actually was.

[That's a pretty interesting situation. Thinking that a good friend is actually someone else, huh...]

But you remembered who he was eventually, right? [Based on the wording, it sounds like they did, at least.]

We did, but only because his daughter used her power to help get our memories back. Otherwise I don't think we would have remembered, and we might've ended up killing him... [It still kind of freaks her out to think about it, even though it happened over a year ago.]

You're probably right. If she hadn't helped you, he might have died... but that's not what happened, is it? Thinking about what could have happened won't do any good. It's a good thing that it all ended well. [In the end, that's what matters most, isn't it? Not what could have happened, but what did happen. All's well that ends well, as they say.]

You're lucky that his daughter could help you. [He really means that. Having someone able to help people regain their memories around back in his world would have helped a lot...]

I have.

Why?

It's just something we had to deal with several times in my world. I was wondering if anyone else had to deal with something similar in the past. [That's the main reason he's asking, really. Back home, they didn't have a way to deal with people forgetting something important, but it's possible that he might be able to discover one here. Sure, there's no guarantee that he'll remember once he returns home, but... it's worth a try, isn't it?]

You often forget things?

No, my memory's fine. [Mostly.] But we met a lot of people who forgot something important.

[And they never managed to figure out who was responsible for that in their world, though he has his own suspicions - which he's pretty certain about by now, thanks to something he found out in this place.]

[ He spends several minutes staring at the words on the page, trying to figure out his own response, before replying. ]

The only memories I have from before I came here are someone else's past. I don't know what mine is.

[That's... a new one. Having memories that are actually someone else's past... It sounds a little strange, but if there are people capable of manipulating another's memories, it's not out of the question that there's a way for someone to end up with another's memories.

But first, a question, still said in the same calm and polite voice as the initial post.]

Did you find out that they weren't your own memories while you were here? [Or was it in his own world? He'd ask how he ended up with another's memories, too, but there's no guarantee that he can answer - not to mention that he'd rather not bombard him with questions about a subject like this.]

voice personafalsify October 19 2011, 01:20:08 UTC
Yeah. I met the one who owns the original memories here. [ Though he's not happy about it, and probably never will be, it's something he's come to accept. ]

I see. [Wow. That's a... difficult situation, to say the least.]

I can't say I've ever had to deal with something like that, so this doesn't mean much...

...but I don't think it matters if these memories are yours or someone else's. Our memories might influence us, but in the end, it's our actions today that define who we are. [And it's always possible to make new memories - ones that he can be certain belong to him, not the one the memories he had before coming here belong to.

He should really take the things he says to heart himself...]
