I totally beat up one of my dozen goals today, or as I told a friend, "I pretty much kicked that race's ass." Ran a 10k (6.2 miles) in 52:52, for an average pace of 8:27. I even managed to finish strong, with an 8:10 for the sixth mile and average of 7:45 for the last never-ending two-tenths of a mile ( Read more... )

As I did last year, I'm going to list some goals for this year, with the hope of keeping myself slightly on track. I don't make resolutions because I don't want to fail at something that I couldn't do. Instead, I set a goal and if I don't reach it, that's OK -- I tried. 2008 had several big events for me: running a marathon, skydiving, going on a cruise and seeing Metallica. Now I have to beat those events in 2009! I'm going to solidify some 2009 goals soon, but here's my year in review.

I'm about to head for the airport, bound for Tucson, Ariz. On Sunday I will run my first-ever full marathon (26.2 miles). Barring any unforeseen calamities -- yes, I've entertained notions of being bitten by a rabid bat or run over by a wayward airplane -- I will be wearing a marathoner's medal by noon Mountain Standard Time on Sunday ( Read more... )

Last year I wrote an entry about some goals for the year. I've bold-faced updates along the way and just added a couple more. Overall, I haven't done too badly. But the big soul-seeking goals? Yeah, not so much. Distance running has been life-changing, though.

I ran 22 miles today! We started at 5 a.m. in dark, fog and 39 degree temperatures. It was great.

Two weeks from now I will be in Tucson, hours away from running my first marathon.
