-- Still writing a massive essay, on a fascinating subject, luckily. All about race and Judaism and early 20th century immigration. Prof says I'm basically writing a master's thesis in a week and I should pare my subject down, but oh well I've always taken on more than I can chew and still pulled shit off

But to give my dad props, he raised me to be an independent thinker in the end, and I'm an independent now, mostly because I loathe partisan politics.

Exactly. I once told my Daddy that the way he raised me led me to be a feminist, and his mind was blown. I explained that he told me I could do anything my brother could do (except drive late at night and build fires because my brother was a Boy Scout therefore fire-making was natural to him), he valued me not for my looks (though my parents tried to be sure to tell me how pretty I was so that I had a good body image) but for my mind and personality, and he disapproved of objectification of women (because of Christian modesty instead of feminist outrage, but what does it matter?). His response was "I raised you to be a Christian, not a feminist, sweetie, but it looks like I helped make you one anyway."

Yay meds. Yay less stress. I'm personally feeling the stress FINALLY easing. So glad the semesters almost over. I sort of feel like I should get some kind of awesome prize for coming out of this one alive (the prize is my education HURRDURRR)
Although I was raised in a liberal family and attend a very secular liberal church, I too don't like throwing my entire political views in with one party, especially since I think both major parties are so very corrupt and confused right now. Come be independent with the rest of us wary noncommittal individuals ;D
JSOFAJSOEFJSEOJFSOEIJFSOFIJS ALSO SO EXCITED FOR PAINTBALL & SAWYER TONIGHT!!!!! btw been meaning to thank you for being one of the people who got me into both Community and Lost. Community is seriously the best thing that has been on television in a really long time. FANTASTIC.

Yay procrastination! Though I'm sad because a lot of the books I need as sources won't be here in time for me to use them so I'll have to do a lot of bullshitting to get by. (PS, I'm an undergraduate doing master's-quality work, and the prof was telling me to cool it so I don't kill myself). After I have my philosophy class, I'm planning on taking the night off and indulging in Community, Parks and Rec, and The Vampire Diaries. So it's all good.

That's pretty much where I am now. I don't like either party, and I think partisan politics leave the rational middle out of the discourse.
been meaning to thank you for being one of the people who got me into both Community and LostYou're very welcome! Community, Lost and Buffy pretty much make up my top 3 favorite television shows of all time (Okay, top 5 because Doctor Who and Arrested Development are on there too). I'm ( ... )

I was raised by Republicans ... to be, if not a Democrat, than at least a liberal thinker. At the same time my dad was lecturing me about why the death penalty was essential and how illegal immigrants shouldn't take American jobs, he was also telling me not to judge people and to love everyone and that everyone is equal and deserving of help/consideration.
As a result, he had his kindergarten-age child get in trouble at school for refusing to say the Pledge of Allegiance (because I thought other countries had to be just as nice, so it wasn't fair to pledge to just one).
My mother has been voted Republican all her life (though she's registered as an independent) ... but she voted for Obama in the last election (something I'm fairly sure she didn't tell my dad). The Tea Party/extreme right has pushed her toward becoming a Democrat, because she doesn't see a place for moderates anymore.
On the other hand, my grandfather once called me a socialist whore. Which was sorta

This is actually an adorable story.
On the other hand, my grandfather once called me a socialist whore. Which was sorta confusing.
My uncle called the college-aged political conversion to liberal "BULshit" - Brainwashed University Liberal Shit.

To be fair, I first started questioning my dad's political beliefs when I was in elementary school. I think he's confused as to how he ended up with two liberal daughters (though my sis is more moderate than I am). At least my bro doesn't care at all about politics, so he mostly just believes what my dad believes. :D
As for context ... my dad told my grandfather I voted for Kerry when I was in the car with the two of them. I got screamed at. A lot. :/
