Lyle, for his part, had come close to this island only once, back when he, Stellaris, and Veda had been weightless and decided to use it for the sake of exploring. They had opted for the other island and, after the odd events there, decided that heading back to more familiar ground was the wisest tack. Still, he had heard of what the island offered after the fact. A glimpse of the past projected on a screen: it sounded too good to pass up.

In fact, if there was anything about this venture that made him nervous, it was that everything seemed a little too convenient now that there was a bridge provided to them. Why give them access after all this time without? Was it an angle or an accident? Only one way to find out, really ( ... )

Krile noticed that the look Lyle was giving the building's interior was one of unfamiliarity as well, but of a rather different kind than her own--she was looking at something she'd never seen before, but he seemed to be looking at something he knew, but differently. That was a bit reassuring.

She shrugged, and headed for the first room on the right. "I've been in here before--the rooms with screens all look the same, more or less." She pushed open the door into the dusty, faux-fabric smell. Oh, and there were the same puddles of sticky syrup and bits of half-crushed popcorn scattered beneath the seats. "Except for the gunk on the floor."

But unlike before, the theater lights had been dimmed down, and a little white circle of light was visible up in the projector booth. The screen itself had an animation of a dancing popcorn bucket and soda cup (and for some reason, a polar bear) reminding patrons of all the things they could buy for reasonable prices before the show began.

"What in tarnation is all this about?"

As far as some parts of the cinematic experience had come, some things never changed. The way the floor clung to the bottom of Lyle's boots as he made his way down the aisle was a tried and true tradition of public theatres everywhere. "I think the gunk is thick enough that it might have strata. You could probably do an archaeological dig here and find the bones of ushers long past."

When Lyle first caught site of the dopey little cartoon up on the screen he wasn't inclined to do more than raise a brow. However, after hearing Krile's bewildered reaction, he couldn't help but crack up.

"Are you familiar with the concept of a commercial?" Well, no, probably not given that she gave the impression that her world lacked a good amount of technology. Without really pausing he went on to explain. "It's a little moving visual advertisement meant to make you want to buy something. ...Some are more effective than others."

Once the ad ran it's course the number 10 popped up on the screen and started cycling through an old fashioned count down ( ... )

Krile resisted the urge to roll her eyes when he started laughing and just listened to his explanation. It sounded rather silly--she'd never seen anything like this in Edensphere and she doubted that she had at home either. On the other hand, Bal had been dwarfed even by an amusement park. Places with commercials probably had too many people for businesses to rely on either word-of-mouth or just being that town's particular blacksmith.

"I don't think this is one of the effective ones." She still didn't get the polar bear.

When the animation changed to the rolling numbers, Krile watched in fascination until she caught Lyle's gesture out of the corner of her eye and hurried after him. The chairs proved to be another small mystery, but after another couple second of trial-and-error she carefully sat down. She, too, wondered what the screen was about to show...

...but when it opened onto a familiar sight, she clapped her hand over her mouth. Oh no, oh please no. Was this going to be a memory like that first one, the one with Grandpa ( ... )

The sound of calm waves against a hull came out of the speakers as the screen showed a large sailing ship--it would have looked like any ship-in-a-bottle if it wasn't for the fact that it had propellers instead of sails, and an apparent crew of only four. One of them was instantly recognizable as Krile, wearing an anxious look that she wasn't bothering to hide. On either side of her were two women: one with a pink bob cut and a yellow-orange dress, and the other with a long purple mane and seaworn clothing, but with sea-green eyes that matched the other exactly. And standing in the back, looking determined but confident, was Bartz ( ... )
