There's the Roseate Spoonbill (partially named for its bill being shaped like a spoon) and the other pink bird--the Flamingo. People sometimes get the two pink birds mixed up, especially if they are not from around here. There is one place around us that has Flamingos in captivity, but they are free to roam the large grounds. You must go all the way to south Florida to see the wild Flamingos. But Spoonbills are here in our area where there are shallow wetlands. They can be a bit elusive and I am always on the lookout for that flash of pink.

Yes, they are really that pink. The undersides of their wings are actually much pinker than the top of the wings. There's no missing them when they are flying and you can see them from beneath. The juveniles are a paler pink and as they get older the pink becomes more intense. The only thing I did to this photo was crop it a bit. The early morning light and being able to get fairly close was a big advantage for me that day.

that spoon bill would be great as a yard ornament!

I'd love a copy of the osprey?
put it facing the door to face any one coming in
actually it would make a great gargoyle.
I love it holding its snack.

Message me your name and address. My gift to you!

Actually the flamingos (the other pink bird) are lawn ornaments all over the place down here. It's a Florida thing, I guess. Most snowbird homes have them in their front yards, plus a few locals, too.

What an excellent photo! You must have been patient to capture that!

That photo, Mine! is perfectly placed in your room. Interesting how both Pete and Dave like it :)

That will be good to see Josh's new place!

Love that one of the spoonbill! Such a beautiful shade of pink. And the detail and texture in the wings is wonderful.
