To ad on to silentrevyrie’s previous post, did you know that Meryl was actually going to play Eva Peron in the Evita movie, but for some banal reason, the filming of the movie was postponed? I did know that yes - it was apparently a big drama at the time.

Meryl even said "I can sing better then her" meaning Madonna, in one article. It's quite hilarious - though I have to say I totally agree with Meryl.

Evita was ruined by Madonna in my humble opinion.

I should add - they are making Sunset Boulevard the musical version and Glenn Close and Meryl are on the top of the contender list.

Glenn Close had said yes initially but now there is talk of Meryl possibly taking over. This is all here-say but from pretty legit sources.

I loved Glenn as Norma Desmond on Broadway but some fangirl in me wants to hear Meryl say, "We didn't need words in those days - we had FACES."

Meryl would be totally brilliant as Norma Desmond. I know there was talk a while back of making the movie with Glenn in the role, but I hadn't heard anything about Meryl possibly doing it instead.

I'm with you on this, as much as I love Glenn, my inner fangirl is willing them to cast Meryl instead.

I am so glad to see that others think Meryl would kill as Norma. I love Glenn Close and I think she has a beautiful voice but I have never thought that her voice was right for "Sunset." I've seen/heard Patti LuPone, Glenn, Betty Buckley and Elaine Paige all play Norma Desmond and while I think Betty was hands down the best, I know that outside of the theatre world she does not have the box office appeal that a Hollywood star has. I think there have been as many rumored Norma's as there were Evita's but after seeing her in "Mamma Mia!" I thought to myself, "Dear god I hope Andrew Lloyd Webber thinks to cast Meryl as Norma!" Glenn was good but Meryl would be amazing.

I love Glenn Close too. I can always remember hearing her sing for the first time and being really surprised at how good she is - probably because I'd only seen her in Fatal Attraction before that ( ... )

yes- i had heard about the Evita drama- and Meryl has a freakin' astounding range- visit youtube and watch anything you can find about 'alice at the palace' because she is WAY up there through half that musical.

Damn, though. Meryl as Evita would have been fuckin' killer- Rainbow High? I think so.

Lol I own a copy of Alice at the Palace. And some of her other early work shows off her range too.

My copy of Alice at the Palace is coming in the mail- after I saw it on Youtube, it was like, okay, massive panic-

I HAVE to own this. Have to. Honestly, if I weren't broke, I'd own every movie Meryl has ever been in, because there's something so captivating about every role- but this whole Alice thing. Man, what a head trip. Some of it is positively absurd, and wonderful- but there are some parts that are just breathtaking and heartbreaking and gah, no words.

*sighs* I got it bad

I'm currently trying to buy up every movie I can that she's been in, but there are SO many, it's going to take forever and cost a small fortune! Do I care? Course not!

Hehe, I actually liked Madonna in this film, right up until the point where I read this post.
Now I'm re-picturing the whole thing in my head with Meryl as Eva - just imagine her Waltz with Che towards the end of the film, definitely would have liked to see that, and yes, Meryl singing those great songs would have been absolutely perfect.

OK...Where do I start? As I am from Argentina, and very familiar with Eva Perón as an icon and a political leader, I would have loved seeing Meryl playing her. It would have been very different I am sure. I must say that Madonna´s personality is actually quite perfect for this role though. I´m not talking about acting skills ( I think she has none, but love her anyway)or vocal range, but that completely driven, calculating and ambitious personality that describes Eva so well. I believe that to play Evita you have to connect with her in a way Madonna did very well. There are not many people who can play her, especially for an Argentinean. I would have loved seeing Meryl try...She keeps on surprising me with everything she does.
