The Duggar family

May 12, 2008 10:07

Last week it was announced that Michelle Duggar is 6 weeks pregnant with her 18th child. Michelle is in her early forties. Her eldest child is 20, her youngest is 9 months. Michelle is, as one might suspect, a stay-at-home mom and all the children are homeschooled ( Read more... )

As is the case with so many of your LJ posts, I find myself in complete agreement. I feel like I should know you better - can we make that happen?

Wow, what an awesome response to get.

I also feel like I should know you better! How serendipitous.

I look at it this way: which system of oppression is it easier to escape from, the patriarchal system of God and Family, or the institutionalized racist war against the inner city underclass? Given the insane rate of incarceration, not to mention the violent crime rate for the city underclass, I have to say it would be easier to escape the religious upbringing, if only for the greatly reduced chance of landing in jail. If David Miscavage's nieces can make it out, anyone has a fighting chance.

My officemate coincidentally emailed me an article about the Duggars this morning. He sent it to me because he found the idea of such an enormous, always-pregnant family hilarious and wanted to share the funny.

Much like you, I didn't find it particularly funny, just thought-provoking. I'm not as worried about their children, simply because I think that human will and love eventually win over indoctrination. I don't think the Quiverfulls will be around forever.

If I were in a room full of people talking about how gay people are ruining the world, I would speak up and tell them that I didn't find that kind of hateful sentiment appropriate.

And so I need to speak up here. I find this kind of hateful sentiment inappropriate. I've been trying for about half an hour to write a comment with a more specific complaint but it always comes out more harsh than I want to be... All I'm trying to say is, "hang on a minute."

In case it wasn't clear, my own post was an attempt, at least in part, to come to grips with my own knee-jerk reactions to the Duggar family's story.

I'm a bit confused about which part of this post, or the comment thread, you are finding hate-full, and I think that in general this thread is a reflection of other people I know trying to thoughtful about this knotty issue. So I'd like you and I to talk about this more, at some point, maybe on the phone?
*hugs*

Like you my information on the Duggars also comes from the internet, so I will preface what I am about to say with the big ole' ALLEGEDLY....

The Ds don't live on welfare and do seem to support their family EXCEPT and UNLESS you feel that getting paid for television, receiving donations of furnishings for your new home and claiming your home as a tax exempt church might not be the same thing as independently supporting your large family.
