Bonus computer update

Aug 08, 2006 10:32

According to deusinnomen, the motherboard/CPU is overheating. Isn't this problem what I BOUGHT this damn motherboard/CPU to correct in the first place? ...I'm about ready to chuck the whole thing and buy a new one. Hell, I almost have, but if I were intending to buy a new computer I'd have picked up a PCI-E vidcard instead of the AGP I did get, which is a ( Read more... )

Yes I get a big house all most all to my self for a few days. And what is every one going to do next year if I go to GenCon?

I'm sure the cats will be fine for a week with a big salt lick and an open faucet tap. :)

Southwest Airlines? Is your friend Nathan a masochist, or what?

(And if he is, then I need to meet this guy.)

Don't ask me, he's Kat's friend. :) I don't have the full story yet anyway, apparently he was originally supposed to be coming in on Delta.

Okay, this confirms that he's a masochist. Delta is the one who's always losing wheels and other parts of the airplane midflight, isn't it?

Not to question Chris, but if the CPU is overheating, it probably just needs one of the following:

1. A new CPU heatsink fan (note that the stuff that comes with the processor is usually not ideal)
2. A fresh layer of conducting compound (e.g. Arctic Silver) between the CPU and the heatsink
3. Reposition existing CPU fan to ensure that you're blowing the hot air OUT of the case and not into it.
4. Check case airflow, make sure air is going through it properly.

I'm fairly certain he did at least try 1 and 2 (he mentioned checking to see what sinks he had lying around), and the case is currently sitting open (though his place is warmer than mine owing to the lack of central air).

By all means, I hope people question me, it keeps me in check.

Having said that, I did all four of those and put a 6k RPM case fan blowing across the CPU fan for added air flow. With all of this, the computer sits around 62C while idling in the BIOS.

I might add that I did find one major source of the rapid overheating, which was the fact that the CPU's voltage was set to be +10% for some reason, so I dropped it back down to normal and that had an immediate effect. (It was hovering over 70C idle before that.)
