When it is determined that a child has some special needs that will qualify him/her for special education services a meeting is called which involves a support team. A support team usually consists of a counselor, parent/guardian of the child, the child’s teacher, perhaps a school psychologist, speech and language pathologist (if appropriate), school principal (if school age), teacher consultant and perhaps a social worker. What is an IEP you ask?
Each special education student must have an IEP. Each IEP must be for one student and must be an individualized document. The IEP plan is a time when the teachers, parents, and school administrators work to develop an education plan that will work for this student. To develop an IEP, parents, teachers, and other staff must work together to understand the student’s unique need. This requires that the team work on how the curriculum will change to support this child’s needs and achievements. The IEP process is based on what is required by special education law--the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, or IDEA.

ASSIGNMENT: Punishment
DUE DATE: by DAY 2
POINTS: 15
The role of punishment is debated in all areas of society. What, in general, is the objective of punishment? Do people use the term punishment incorrectly? If we apply the principles of learning described in this chapter, are we using punishment in an appropriate manner? Consider the use of punishment by the criminal justice system in our country and across the world. How successful have these systems been in using punishment to bring about long-term changes in behavior? Is incarceration the best route to rehabilitation?

The term ‘Milieu Teaching’ encompasses several different areas of teaching, which are combined into one system. They are used in regular everyday activities. They encourage communication and cognitive development. The term ‘Milieu’ literally means ‘the environmental condition or surroundings’ (www.dictionary.com). Milieu teaching includes rewarding a child for communicating a specific message or idea. However, the reward has to be something that can be given repeatedly. Failing to reward the child after you feel he or she has perfected a particular behavior will send the wrong message. This is why it is important to reward him or her with something reasonable, such as a hug
