The role of punishment is debated in all areas of society. What, in general, is the objective of punishment? Do people use the term punishment incorrectly? If we apply the principles of learning described in this chapter, are we using punishment in an appropriate manner? Consider the use of punishment by the criminal justice system in our country and across the world. How successful have these systems been in using punishment to bring about long-term changes in behavior? Is incarceration the best route to rehabilitation?
