I don't see us as having much of a choice. Either we endure it, or we fall.

I know what I plan on doing.

That is the way of a lot of things, miss.

Good. Then do it, as I will as well.

...You sound a little young to be ready to endure somewhere like Mayfield.

[That's concern in her tone, rather than skepticism. Oh, the poor kids in this town...]

Will you be alright?

[There's a pause and slight amusement in his voice when he responds. He had been trying to drive away all his amusement, but that was a lost cause.]

I assure you miss, I'll be quite fun. I've gone through hardship before.

Considering the people here...I'd think you have too, have you not?

Life, at its very core, is a challenge. A contest.

You die, or you endure. The choice isn't hard, as I've come to find.

It is how I see it. It is how life is.

Do I?

Oh, they do, even though I haven't been here long but... This sounds really bad. Really... ominous.

Fear does nothing but give them what they want.

You should let it wash away.

Easier said than done when you don't know what they're going to do! I haven't been here long, and mostly what they've done is be ridiculous. But I've heard some pretty scary stories...

Then simply think of the worst thing they can do. The absolute worst.

And you'll find that isn't what they'll do.

'Course.

That's the way it's gotta be. It's not as if there's any other choice, anyway.

Precisely.

You sink or you swim. That's all anyone can do.

They can crush us, but I hear you just pop up again the next day. So what's the worst that can happen? ...Making me wish I won't wake up again?

Like that's ever gonna happen. I've still got Monkey Master 5 to look forward to.

[He has to stifle a small smile. Any voice of rebellion, or stubborn perseverance, nets his approval.]

They can try, but it takes a certain type of person to be crushed so badly. I doubt many in this town are that type of person.

There's quite a few songs I'd still like to hear. I adore music. That's enough for me.

I do not. I will not allow them to drag me into their plots and plans and I will not be lured by anyone else. Everyone else is free to act as they see fit, and I will watch the choices they make. But I will not partake in what I shouldn't.

From the sounds of it, you will not have a choice.

What then?

Will you simply sit and do nothing as you and others are forced through whatever game they have.

I will sit and watch while others do as they will, only acting when I must. They have compromised my neutrality once, I will not let them do it again.

A wasted position, to contribute to nothing.
