Day 25 - A first, in great detail

I tend to find it hard when a question is a bit open-ended ... a first "what"?

So - I thought I would talk about my first ever patient once I was qualified as an osteopath ... how about that for random?

I spent 4 years training, and when I qualified in July 1983, I felt ready to take on the world.  In those days 85% of our patients had low back pain, 10% had shoulder symptoms, while the rest had ankle, knee or shoulder problems.

I started work 10 days after graduating, working 2 days a week at the prcatice of the Principal of the College.  First patient - a new one, never been to an osteopath ... great, they don't have any pre-concieved ideas.  So, I went in, armed (mentally) with all the questions ... asked name, address etc ... then said, OK where's the problem (werll it was a more long winded question - LOL)

And ... they poinetd to their jaw joint!

In 4 years we had discussed the jaw, but had never practiced on it ... I almost died on the spot!

Fortunately, as well as 4 years of anatomy and muscle techniques - we were taught how to b-######-t our way through any panic!

And, the good news is, that the patient returned the following week, 90% better!

I may have now left the profession, but that is one appointment that I will never forget - 35 mins of panic!
