[Mission 101] I'm at it again

Jan 01, 2011 00:56

I finished my previous attempt at mission101 back in August with very little fanfare. I didn't even make a post about it. I learned quite a bit about myself during the experience and decided I would give it another go. Originally I wanted to start on December 1, but I had some trouble finishing up my list. I spent a lot of time on it today and I'm pretty ( Read more... )

Ooh, good to know! I took probably the equivalent of two years of French in high school (officially I got credit for four, but I'm from a very rural area of Maine and our teacher didn't really speak french that well so we made excruciatingly slow progress). I still do ok with reading, but trying to write or speak the words and grammar just aren't on command anymore. But maybe after I go through the LiveMocha refreshers I'll be up to the task :) And those are fun books anyway - entertaining and not too much thinking, so I'll keep them in mind.

Just a comment about getting Photoshop - if you're a student, you may be able to get a significant discount at your school. (I think my school has it for $179, still a lot, but still a deep discount.) Additionally, while full Photoshop is great, Elements is also very functional.

Good luck on your list! You have a lot of awesome items on here. :) What's the Speed Math book you have listed? That sounds interesting to me (and I'm working on a Master's in Accounting, so it also sounds useful).

Thanks for the tip about Photoshop - yes $179 would be a great improvement over the regular price. I know we do have some software over there, I'll have to see what kind of discounts they offer me. I hadn't even heard of Elements but I'll have to check it out ( ... )

I have Photoshop if you decide that an "illegal" copy is okay. ;)

Awwww thanks! I think it comes from being an engineer, I tend to over-think things. One rule I've always had is I don't want to make goals that rely on other people (such as "get engaged" or "make ryan eat seafood", both of which I've seen). If it's not entirely in my control, it's not really -my- goal ( ... )

should have put the 50 Banned Books That Everyone Should Read on my list, too, dammit!

Heh yeah they are pretty great. If you have a reading goal you could always change it to "read X books (10 of which must be from the 50 banned books..." But not sure how you feel about modifying your list - some people are more ok with it than others.

Thanks. But, um: http://i-hate-music.livejournal.com/259139.html
Here's my list if you scroll down to the "books" part you can probably see why adding another one of these would just be kind of TOO much. i ll remember it for next time, though.

Wow, nice! You must be quite the reader! I really wish I had time for goals like that :/ Are you allowing some of your goals to overlap, like if you read a book by X then it also counts as one of your 500 books? Or are these 500 books different from the books read for the other goals (I've seen it done both ways, but I prefer the first just because... I'm lazy? I dunno)

I'm a native Finnish speaker, don't hesitate to contact me if you want to practice your Finnish! :)

Good luck with your list!

Thanks for the offer :) I have one native Finn on my friends list now, but she uses a LOT of slang and shortened forms when she writes in Finnish (which isn't often). At the moment, most of what I can say is limited to this:

Olen Deana. Asun Dallasissa, mutta olen Mainesta. Minulla on kaksi musta kissat ja yksi koira. Opiskellen tietokone insinööri yliopistossa.

Um, probably some more if I really think about it. But pretty basic stuff - though I enjoy trying to figure out the meaning of stuff using my handy-dandy dictionary, as long as it's not too complex.

You could also contact me, if you want but anyway, here's a little help on this example (hope you don't mind a little correction):

"Olen", you can also use "(minun) nimeni on" perhaps? And:
"kaksi mustaa kissaa"
"opiskelen tietokoneinsinööriksi"

But it's just little bits, the whole thing is still very understandable for me :)
I'm not the very best in grammar oftentimes, but I can try to help whenever you need (hopefully I won't be too busy this year!)

I don't mind correction at all, in fact I appreciate it. That's the best way to learn, really. The only one I guess I don't understand is the endings "aa" for "mustaa kissaa". I thought plural ended in t, like kissat. Is this just a weird exception, or does it have to do with the sentence I used, since I said "minulla"?

I mean, if I said "Nämä ovat kissat" would that be correct?
