the picture on the background there is actually taken in the chapel. but you still can't get a sense of what it was like. i'd youtube them, but that won't do it either. carla bozulich originally released an album called evangelista back in 2006, i think. that's a good place to start. now she's calling the band by its name, and they have a new record that's a bit more conventional. she was also in the geraldine fibbers back in the 90's (a band i've never really checked out for some reason), and she collaborates with nels cline a lot. she's a total badass in person. one of the most dynamic performers i've ever seen, really.

god damn it! we're actually getting the xiu xiu/prurient part of that tour IN DEKALB between the New York and San Fran dates- but no Carla here. I can't believe she's not even playing Chicago. COLOR ME JEALOUS (still)
I have actually not read a ton of reviews of wall-e because I wanted to minimize spoilers, but I'll bet not a lot got beyond the basic premise(s) like you did here. Thank you-- I think you are probably a perfect person to review it too since you have the combo of art school and sci-fi geek (though I suspect you are a low-level geek) to get what Pixar people were doing

being that i live with a high-level-geek, i'll say yeah... "low-level" all the way for me... let's just say i don't watch battlestar gallatica for the spaceships, hahaha.
i agree that there's more pleasure to kids' films sometimes, but i think you could kinda apply that logic to anything? i think it's important to never brush aside pleasure as part of a discussion (i try not to do that when i write here), but i don't think animation or children's films should necessarily follow a different critical model than anything else. to push this idea in a positive direction, i was chatting with chocolatebark about how WALL-E could be interpreted as a more successful update of alphaville-- as another futuristic dystopia in which love is "a glitch in the system" (i think that's how chocolatebark put it). its pixar-ness doesn't necessarily disqualify it from measuring up to godard-ness

I still wished that WALL-E didn't have humanscut_deadJuly 30 2008, 13:45:03 UTC
I've had Wanderlust on my shelf for the last 2 years, which I bought on impulse, because I'm in love with the notion of somebody writing a book on walking. Unfortunately, I haven't gotten around to reading it yet.
The mixtape looks awesome & will be downloaded once I get home tonight.

i think wanderlust is the one i'm gonna read next. she's really great, and its that kind of impulse ("a history of walking", etc.) that makes her great.
Oh, such a good mix. I love the Go-Betweens song a ton! And I love the cover of I Only Have Eyes for You, and The First Cut is the Deepest. Really, I like it all. It's a wonderful mix in that the complete package flows together really well and everything evokes a certain mood from slightly different angles. It seems like a sad summer mix too...
you know what? this is almost the perfect paradigm post of what LJ and the intarnets should be. utopian. you the man. i do love a meaty post. with links and pix. hoooo boy. happy summer!

And I am almost violently interested in seeing this Evangelista individual live.
