Day 51: Intercom, Evening

Aug 23, 2010 03:54

"Well, that's it for today's activities and hygiene!" The Head Doctor said with a jovial tone just after the sound system's jingle. He seemed excited and maybe even giddy. "Our nurses will now be escorting everyone back to their rooms, and some of you might find that you have brand new roommates to share your dinner with! That's right: we've gotten ( Read more... )

After talking to Albedo, despite feeling a bit better, Ritsuka had kept to himself for the rest of the day. His message on the board had revealed that he still had friends here, still had people who cared for him, but it was harder now to keep his spirits up. Soubi was gone. Kio was gone. The people he'd relied on so much since coming here were gone. It was a hard blow to deal with and he wasn't entirely certain what he was going to tell Nataku when he got back to the room at night when the other boy teased him about his grumpy face. Today he wasn't much in the mood for teasing ( ... )

He'd taken note of those who had responded to his post and those who had not. He had no idea how many of those who had merely missed the message were still around and he was almost afraid to ask the nurses as the final shift came to an end. But as a captain he knew well his responsibilities to a team and he also knew the risk of not asking after his men. As he finished taking his notes for the day, his nurse came to get him and he finally worked up the courage to ask.

The answer was as he expected, but it didn't lessen the blow any.

As he started the walk back to his room, he felt like the floor had dropped out beneath him. He barely remembered the walk, but when his consciousness registered the change of place - his room - he knew he had moved. How could it be that in one night, one day the History Club had lost almost all of its leadership? Not only that, but Okita had lost so many of his friends in a span of two or three days. Ayumu first and now Kenren, Nataku and, of all people, Homura ( ... )

It always seemed like Luke was the hardest to find when Guy needed to talk to him the most. Guy knew that wasn't his friend's fault, though; this place just made it hard to meet up at times. But since he hadn't heard from Luke for certain before making it back to dinner, it looked like he was going to end up swinging by Claude's room after all. He felt bad for constantly sticking with Claude instead of being of proper help to Luke, but he couldn't do much if he wasn't hearing back from him ( ... )

The door opened and Okita tried to break himself of his reverie. He wasn't hungry but he supposed he'd need to make a show of eating. If he worried Guy too much that would be unacceptable. So when his roommate entered the room and gave him their usual greeting, Okita turned and smiled at him, nodding his head slightly. "Good evening, Guy-san."

The greeting was automatic and it helped reel him back to reality. It helped ground him in the fact that Guy was still here, that some of his friends were still here. That thought helped, more than he thought it would.

"How are you today?" he asked, looking away to concentrate on his food. Chicken - something they ate often at the Shinsengumi headquarters. Hijikata had insisted upon his men eating meat to bolster their energy. Okita didn't move to pick up his fork right away. Instead, he pushed away from the desk and stood, moving toward his bed. "I have something for you. Would you like it now or later?"

It was the same greeting as always, and Guy only nodded in response. Now didn't seem to be the time to talk about what might be bothering his roommate, but would there ever be a time? Or were there others that Okita had already set aside to talk to? People he could trust, or something along those lines. Guy could understand not wanting to open up too much around someone you shared your living space with, though. Part of him had always wanted to look over his shoulder, back at the Fabre manor ( ... )

Even though not being able to see Leon's face was a little sad, it had been nice to hear the boy's voice just the same. While learning that he'd found another group of captives to rely on during the nights made Claude's stomach tighten with an uncomfortable feeling he couldn't quite name, he had to privately acknowledge that between the zombie infection, the disaster in the basement, and now his blindness, there were a lot of things surrounding him that Leon probably hadn't needed to see. That was a depressing thought to consider, but true nonetheless. As he was now, he was just a burden on people he cared about ( ... )

Today had, once again, been depressingly unproductive. He hated the way things were now - so routine, so disappointing. He'd lived an anonymous life before, one he'd loved because there was so much freedom entailed in the simple act of keeping everyone at arm's length - several even further away than that.

But here... Everyone was crowded in together, and he had to struggle to keep his sanity in check every day. He couldn't wait for the place to get dark, so he could pop out that cigarette he'd been thinking about all damn day, light that thing up, and-

Somehow, he'd forgotten about his roommate. Shit, he thought as the nurse tugged him gently into the room, where the food was already awaiting him on the desktop. He grimaced at it, glaring especially at the caramel apple. Such a tease, Landel, he couldn't help thinking as he sat down on the bed, the nurse only giving him a polite smile as she shut the door behind her ( ... )

Claude tilted his head up from his plate just as he managed to swallow another bite of chicken. He could hear the sound of the door opening while Mason stepped inside, which was soon followed by the door closing, and the lock clicking shut as it always did. He'd been here long enough for such noises to become routine, and it was easy to draw some semblance of comfort from them, even if it wasn't much. At least those simple actions were something he could expect and understand by sound alone, as opposed to some of the more unpredictable encounters with patients during the day, and the weird curve balls that Landel threw their way at night ( ... )

It only made him feel even more uncomfortable that he'd received a smile for his efforts. That was probably due to the fact that, despite his not knowing Claude very well or for very long, Matt could already tell the difference between the boy's real smile and one he was putting on just for show. It wasn't very difficult, even under the best of circumstances, for him to see the truth in the lie - never had been, really. His natural talent had only progressed throughout the years, becoming a real skill that he'd managed to utilize in the real world.

Before his death and capture and forced captivity, that is. Funny that it all occurred in that same order, he thought, allowing himself a mildly amused smirk only because he knew his injured roommate wouldn't see it ( ... )

It would seem that, tonight, an interesting puzzle was the very thing that would await him. But all was well, as the notice Erika had left upon the bulletin had captured the Nobody's interest. Yes, tonight would be promising indeed.

But first, there was dinner. When entering what would be his room, the Nobody noticed he was the first to arrive. But he cared little, as he merely moved over to the desk on his side of the room and took a seat. First there would be dinner, then he would await the institute's shift from fake light to it's remarkable darkness.

The nice thing about being himself was not having to deal with all of Yue's hair, Yukito mused to himself as he followed the nurse down the hall toward his room. The last shower day his hair had still been quite damp by dinner, which always left the back of his shirt unpleasantly damp as well, but today it had dried within its usual short time. There were other good things, of course, but sometimes the simple things were the ones that stuck in your mind the most.

As he walked through the door, however, the only thing on his mind was the dinner tray the nurse had for him. Dinner was never enough food here, since they wouldn't give him nearly as much as he took for himself during the other meals, but he wasn't about to turn down food or anything. But as he took a step toward the desk he suddenly realized something was different -- his roommate was awake. And... this was the first time he'd ever met the man while looking like himself, which meant that when night fell....

Yue was immediately dismayed, but there was nothing they could do ( ... )

Had Xemnas been capable of it, then he might have experienced the sensation of 'surprise' when an unknown person walked through the door. But a man without an essence to contain these sensations, emotions, there was only the faintest echo produced by a memory of the time he still possessed a heart. A faint memory that, for one who did not truly exist, would become faint curiosity at best.

The Nobody watched the boy with his orange eyes for a moment, observing as he made a beeline to the dinner tray. A new roommate, then, in accordance to what the head doctor had mentioned a brief while ago. Such a shame, as he had meant to question this 'Yue' about a certain occurrence when the darkness had taken hold of the institute a few nights prior, but he had not yet been granted the opportunity. It was unfortunate, but the Superior did not - could not - feel any disappointment.

Then, the boy noticed his presence. "Good evening," Xemnas offered in return, nodding slowly.

After a moment to chew and swallow his current bite of food, he added, "I'm Yukito. Tsukishiro Yukito. Nice to meet you." Since he essentially was meeting the man for the first time, given how stubbornly Yue had maintained control during their previous evenings together, it was true. Even his roommate didn't really seem like the friendly and talkative type.

He quickly returned his attention to the tray of food, trying to eat slower than normal so that it felt like he was getting more. Technically he didn't need to eat as much to maintain Yue like he used to, but he'd never lost his appetite. Plus it gave him something to concentrate on other than how Yue grew more irritable by the second, anticipating the arrival of night.

Finally, the head doctor's announcement signaled the start of dinner. Not to say that Tenzen looked forward to the excuse of food this place provided, but at least it meant that the daytime's charade would be coming to a close. Where the nights had some potential to be useful (or an illusion thereof), the days were utterly ridiculous with such silly activities. The nurses still insisted on treating him as if he was incapable of common sense. Had the ninja not already long lost his sanity, he likely would have during the time he had stayed here.

The room was empty when Tenzen entered, but he didn't quite care. He took a seat at the desk on his side of the room, studying his maps as he began eating his dinner.

[jack spent his first day here knocked out, so i'm not sure where exactly he would have been. do they take medicated people to separate rooms or just leave them in their own? for my own ease, i'm going to say that he never saw tenzen, regardless of where he was.]Jack didn't say anything when his nurse and orderly escort dropped him off in front of his door. The woman's face wore the same expression as the annoying image on his tee shirt, and just as consistently. If there really were monsters roaming the halls at night, he found himself hoping that one would rough her up a bit. Maybe then she'd stop smiling ( ... )

Dark eyes shot up from his maps as the door opened, watching the man who was his new roommate. Tenzen had seen the man before; he had been the one who was asleep the other night. It obviously meant that his previous roommate had been 'released', but the ninja couldn't quite say he cared for his fate, however; they had only spoken once, and even then his existence was of no immediate relevance. He was no Kouga, and had not proved to be either a threat or being useful in striking them or this institute down ( ... )

Food didn't hold much interest. The chicken didn't smell particularly awful, but it also wasn't doing anything for his appetite. The caramel apple just looked disgusting. The coffee-- no. He hadn't had a decent cup of coffee since his life had fallen to pieces all around him. He slammed the door to the dusty corridor of those particular thoughts. He just wanted to cut out the pain.

Jack looked up at the sound of his roommate rummaging in his closet, a welcome distraction. Well, a distraction, anyway. When the other man pulled an axe from the recesses, it was enough for Jack to prop himself up on one arm and stare. "Mental hospital that missed a fucking axe in a weapons search?" Oh yes, the picture painted by Kagura's words that morning was coming together even more now. Horrors visited in the night upon those who didn't deserve it as well as those who did. Indiscriminate torture seemed to be a favourite of deranged madmen everywhere.
