Day 51: Intercom, Evening

Aug 23, 2010 03:54

"Well, that's it for today's activities and hygiene!" The Head Doctor said with a jovial tone just after the sound system's jingle. He seemed excited and maybe even giddy. "Our nurses will now be escorting everyone back to their rooms, and some of you might find that you have brand new roommates to share your dinner with! That's right: we've gotten ( Read more... )

i will never forgive you. (nottalking) razing_phoenix August 29 2010, 04:28:11 UTC
It was the same greeting as always, and Guy only nodded in response. Now didn't seem to be the time to talk about what might be bothering his roommate, but would there ever be a time? Or were there others that Okita had already set aside to talk to? People he could trust, or something along those lines. Guy could understand not wanting to open up too much around someone you shared your living space with, though. Part of him had always wanted to look over his shoulder, back at the Fabre manor.

He was taken by surprise when the other man stood from his seat, though -- and yet he couldn't help feeling a little excited at the same time. Had the day (or night, in this case) finally come? Was he going to have a proper sword after all this time? It felt like he'd been waiting an eternity, even if he had probably only barely hit the thirty day mark, if that.

"Now, I guess," he said with a raised eyebrow, dropping his utensils and standing from his seat so that he could properly accept the gift. If that was what it was, anyway. He couldn't be sure, but it seemed likely. Unless it was another piece of origami, but presenting it like this would just be teasing.

As he'd guessed, Guy wanted his present now. He'd been waiting long enough for it after all. However, this was the last thing he'd ever be able to promise the man. After this, just figuring out how to run the club was going to be hard enough. Gaining him favors from anyone would be...difficult. Okita didn't have the connections Homura had, nor was he willing to push as the demi-god did to forge ties, however strained.

Turning away, he reached between the mattress and the bed frame, grasping the hilt of the sword. It was a foreign weapon and Okita didn't know the name of it, but it had a strong feel to it. A long, broad looking blade with a sharp tip and a thick hilt probably to aid in gripping the thing. As he pulled it from its hiding place, Okita was careful not to cut the bed or catch anything. The last thing he wanted to do was nick the carefully constructed blade.

Holding the hilt in one hand, the blade balanced on his other palm, he faced Guy and smiled, presenting it to him. "You've waited a long time. I'm sorry I couldn't bring you exactly what you wanted, but this is the last item we received from our weaponsmith before he disappeared." And the last item he ever received from Homura. "I hope you put it to good use."

The moment that Okita pulled the blade out, Guy found his eyes widening and his feet taking him one, two, three steps closer without asking for his permission. The sword looked surprising well-crafted for having been made in this place, and more than that, it was the right size. It was exactly what he needed after relying on a short sword for so long, and he had to fight not to just walk over and grab it right away so he could get an idea of the weight and the feel of it.

Instead, Guy reigned himself in and waited until Okita had extended it to him, hilt-first. His roommate was polite as always, and probably would be to the very end. (Whatever that end might be, but Guy didn't want to think too hard on it.) Smiling and bowing his head in thanks, he took it slowly and carefully, accepting the weapon into his hands almost as if it was a living thing. And in a way, it was, or it would become so in his hands. An extension of himself.

Though when Okita explained where the sword had come from, Guy found himself frowning. So this had been meant for someone else, though it clearly hadn't made it to its intended owner. Just like Ashton's sword. It seemed he was doomed to hand-me-downs, not that he was going to complain. It just felt wrong, to take someone else's weapon. "I see," he replied somberly. "Well, if whoever it was meant to belong to ever returns, let me know, and I'll give it back." That only seemed fair. At least this meant that he could return Ashton's sword to Claude for safekeeping now.

Turning toward his bed, Guy gingerly laid the sword on the covers and then glanced back to his dinner. It had been a test of self-control to not start swinging the thing around right then and there, but that would be blatantly dangerous. What he needed to do now was continue eating to keep his strength up.

Before heading back to his desk, though, Guy glanced back toward Okita with a warm smile. "Thank you again. This will be a huge help, and I'll have to find a way to pay you back for it." He didn't care if Okita said that nothing was necessary until he was blue in the face. He was going to think of something.

Guy's excitement at finally getting his hands on a sword was almost palpable and Okita's smile widened faintly at the thought that he was able to do that for him. When he'd promised Guy a sword, he'd initially thought it would be easy and thus hadn't thought much of it. Then, after everything, when he'd been able to get the sword made and was promised it after all, it had become quite the ordeal to pry it from the group's hands. Now that it was tied to its new owner, he felt a sense of accomplishment he hadn't felt in a long time.

At least until Guy frowned. Okita wondered if his friend wasn't satisfied with the weapon now that he had it, but his fears were soon pushed away. "The person it was meant to belong to is you now, Guy-san. That sword is yours. It belongs to no one else but you."

In all honesty, Okita had no idea who it was meant for anymore. The names of those who had come and gone from the club were so many that the intended party was no longer clear. He watched as Guy set the sword on his bed and hoped his friend believed him. That sword was meant for Guy's hands now. Even if the former supposed owner came back, he wouldn't know to look for the weapon anyway.

Sitting down on his bed, Okita smiled back at Guy, happy to see his roommate pleased with his gift. When the other swordsman offered to pay him back for it, Okita shook his head and refused. It may have been futile to do so, but Okita didn't feel he had the right to accept repayment for it. "The one you need to repay is no longer here, Guy-san, so please, don't worry about it."

As much as Okita seemed to mean what he was saying about the sword now being his, Guy couldn't completely kick the feeling that he had stolen it from someone else. It was irrational, especially since there was a large chance that its original owner wouldn't be coming back, and yet he couldn't just brush it off. Granted, he would never know if the person returned unless Okita told him, and his roommate probably wouldn't at this point.

Which meant that he was just going to have to accept that it was his, and that wasn't such a bad deal, was it? Smiling, he finally moved back to his desk to continue his meal, but he couldn't help eyeing the weapon every now and then. It was hard to keep his eyes off of it, like it might disappear if he looked away for too long.

"Well, we'll see. If I come across something that I think you might want or need, then I'm going to grab it for you." Nothing was coming to mind, he had to admit, but maybe he'd know what the gift was when he saw it. He was going to keep it in the back of his mind, at the very least.

Now all he had to do was make sure to return Ashton's sword to Claude. He wasn't sure how his friend was going to feel about taking it back, but Guy thought it was the right thing to do. If he didn't have a way of getting this new sword back to its rightful owner, then he could at least attempt to do so with Ashton. He realized it was a bit foolish to be trying to give away weapons, but he was only doing what thought was best.

"Oh, by the way, I saw that there was origami in the Arts and Crafts room today!" he remarked as he thought back on it while taking a bite of his dinner. "Did you make use of it?"

It was fun, seeing Guy glance from his food to the sword back and forth like that. His anticipation of holding it in his hands proper was clear as day and Okita couldn't remember a time when he'd seen someone so happy at receiving a weapon before. He supposed it was natural since Guy was a swordsman who had been without his sword for so long, but it was still cute. Without realizing it, he laughed a little, shaking his head when Guy insisted upon finding something for him.

"If you insist," he said, smiling faintly. He knew that no amount of persuading would deter Guy from this idea and admittedly, he didn't really want to beyond what was polite. It gave him something to look forward to day after day. It forced him to promise himself to stay here just that little bit longer.

"Origami?" He hadn't heard of that, actually. He'd spent most of the day concerned with finding people and dealing with the slowly unfolding chaos that he hadn't really paid attention to what the intercom had said. "Ah, I'm afraid I didn't. That's unfortunate. I would have made you something."

Good, Okita had finally given in. Not that he had much of a choice, as it wasn't like he could stop Guy from getting him something. He was going to have to think of something on his own, since he doubted that Okita was going to be willing to give him any ideas. He'd just have to pay attention to his roommate and see if he was struck with a stroke of genius. Or he'd just try and gather some sweets for him, but that was almost too easy.

It was a shame that Okita hadn't gotten a chance to try out the origami stuff, though. Guy had been a bit too distracted by Luke to give it a try, which he regretted now. Sometimes he was just a little too fixated, and then he looked back and sighed at himself. But he'd just gotten so used to keeping an eye out for the redhead, and they had something important that they still had to discuss.

"That's too bad," he said with a frown. "I would have tried to make something for you, but I was kind of distracted," he admitted. "But it probably wouldn't have turned out that well, anyway." Guy could be good at that kind of stuff, but usually only after a bit of practice.

Though before he could say more about the paper folding, the intercom came on, causing him to abandon his meal and turn toward the speaker so that he could pay attention to the announcement.
