Day 51: Intercom, Evening

Aug 23, 2010 03:54

"Well, that's it for today's activities and hygiene!" The Head Doctor said with a jovial tone just after the sound system's jingle. He seemed excited and maybe even giddy. "Our nurses will now be escorting everyone back to their rooms, and some of you might find that you have brand new roommates to share your dinner with! That's right: we've gotten ( Read more... )

[jack spent his first day here knocked out, so i'm not sure where exactly he would have been. do they take medicated people to separate rooms or just leave them in their own? for my own ease, i'm going to say that he never saw tenzen, regardless of where he was.]

Jack didn't say anything when his nurse and orderly escort dropped him off in front of his door. The woman's face wore the same expression as the annoying image on his tee shirt, and just as consistently. If there really were monsters roaming the halls at night, he found himself hoping that one would rough her up a bit. Maybe then she'd stop smiling.

The room had been empty in the morning when he'd left, but now the desk at the foot of the other bed was occupied. Logically he'd been prepared for a roommate, since the room was set up for two people, but he still wasn't pleased to feel another presence in his personal space.

With the nurse gone, he stopped pretending to give a damn about fitting in and making friends. Ignoring the other man completely, he walked past the meal set out on his own desk and laid down on the bed, staring at the ceiling, arms behind his head. After a moment he yanked off his grey shirt and threw it on the floor. Even though he couldn't see the smiley face, just knowing it was on him grated against his nerves. The nurses wouldn't let him walk the Institute in just his undershirt, but there was no one to reprimand him for it now.

Dark eyes shot up from his maps as the door opened, watching the man who was his new roommate. Tenzen had seen the man before; he had been the one who was asleep the other night. It obviously meant that his previous roommate had been 'released', but the ninja couldn't quite say he cared for his fate, however; they had only spoken once, and even then his existence was of no immediate relevance. He was no Kouga, and had not proved to be either a threat or being useful in striking them or this institute down.

But the stranger was now obviously awake, and thankfully did not engage into senseless small talk. Tenzen simply wasn't one for ridiculous things such as making friends and maintaining conversation about the weather, so he appreciated the silence. A business-like, cold attitude he usually displayed was likely to be considered his best behavior, for that matter.

Either way, he did not take the initiative with speaking, the only response to the moving shirt a mere glance.

After a moment, he closed his journal and continued on his meal while using these infuriating and unhygienic eating utensils. Perhaps he should've taken the opportunity to post suggestions yesterday for requesting chopsticks to be given out during mealtimes. After he had finished, he stood up to make the few preparations left for nightfall. Collecting the axe from the closet, he took a brief moment to inspect it's state.

Food didn't hold much interest. The chicken didn't smell particularly awful, but it also wasn't doing anything for his appetite. The caramel apple just looked disgusting. The coffee-- no. He hadn't had a decent cup of coffee since his life had fallen to pieces all around him. He slammed the door to the dusty corridor of those particular thoughts. He just wanted to cut out the pain.

Jack looked up at the sound of his roommate rummaging in his closet, a welcome distraction. Well, a distraction, anyway. When the other man pulled an axe from the recesses, it was enough for Jack to prop himself up on one arm and stare. "Mental hospital that missed a fucking axe in a weapons search?" Oh yes, the picture painted by Kagura's words that morning was coming together even more now. Horrors visited in the night upon those who didn't deserve it as well as those who did. Indiscriminate torture seemed to be a favourite of deranged madmen everywhere.

The response to his weapon (which was in a satisfiable state) made an amused smirk appear on Tenzen's lips. This man had to be a new arrival, or he wouldn't have reacted so surprised at the mere sight of an axe. His dark eyes glanced to the stranger for a moment, before placing his axe upon the desk.

"Then it would seem the staff is blind, wouldn't you agree?" he said, before commencing his preparations, which now consisted of hiding his scalpels away from obvious sight. When the night would fall, Tenzen wanted to leave as soon as possible.

Jack sighed and went back to staring at the ceiling, legs crossed casually at the ankles. "They're something. I'm not sure blind is the best description." Evil motherfuckers seemed a bit more fitting. The appearance of the weapon did raise a question, though. "Are you going out tonight?" When the creepy hospital you found yourself dropped in turned out to contain monsters that went bump in the night, Jack would have assumed that self preservation would have left most everyone hiding under their beds. Not that human nature was often logical.

The staff could be described by various word, but Tenzen saw no need to enlighten his new roommate on them. Instead, he chose to answer the second question.

"Of course," he responded. Such a silly question, he certainly wasn't grabbing his axe for the sake of showing it off to his roommate. "A manner of punishing the one responsible and returning home rather than dealing with this nonsense can hardly be found by remaining in this cell."
