Yet another intercom jingle sounded, and the nurses, anticipating the Head Doctor's orders, already began grouping around the patients as he began to speak

Well, today could have probably gone worse somehow, Badou reasoned. The silver lining on this cloud would buy all of Russia with some change to spare if he could just figure out exactly what it was. He was hoping for the room full of cigarettes. Or a nightshift monster you had to smoke your way past. (He really hoped the silver lining wasn't the pasta. As good as it looked, it didn't taste anything like marlboros.)
He flopped down in bed and laced his fingers across his stomach. Maybe, if he was lucky, his roommate wouldn't be french this time.
Haku woke suddenly, confused for a brief moment before the emotion turned to annoyance. The nurse came in and smiled at him. "Oh my. You just slept the day away. But, it's probably a good thing. I'm sure you're feeling much better now, right dear?" She set his tray on the desk and left him alone.
Where was Artemis? He quickly ran his hands over the bandages he still wore, taking note that they were much less thick now and it didn't hurt nearly so much to move.
"Just fine," Artemis said with a smile. "We engaged in our usual back and forth, nothing tremendously exciting. I have a feeling he doesn't know what to do with me anymore. Perhaps he'll transfer me to a new doctor, he may find me a little boring now. I flat out told him that I broke into his office and found glass jars full of eyes in his drawers and he said a nurse must have mentioned it to me. Ridiculous, isn't it? If that's the best he can do now, I think I'm quite finished with this one.
"Did you want your dinner?" Artemis asked, getting up to get it even though Haku hadn't responded yet. "If you've slept all day, you must be hungry--though I'm glad to see that you can at least sit up without feeling exorbitant amounts of pain."
Artemis seemed content to rattle on about the happenings in his doctor's office, and his disposition was far from the silent, morose one he'd displayed in the hallway. He was glad to see Haku again, perhaps that was what was sparking this sudden outpouring of cheerful energy. He couldn't possibly

Shikamaru didn't waste time considering whether the doctor was right. If anything, he needed to figure out why she thought she was right, or, more accurately, why the institute thought that focusing on what the people he knew thought of him would be more upsetting than focusing on his actual inadequacies. The Leaf-nin didn't see it, so of course they didn't consider him useless or weak. There was little room in the ninja world for sentimentality, so anyone considered useless or weak wouldn't find themselves on teams or called upon for missions. There was no room for dead weight

Shikamaru was perfectly fine with being left alone. The neat bed in the morning implied that his last roommate had vanished or died, and since they seemed pretty much the same in this place, he didn't care which. He wasn't in the mood to care about much

Both lunch and the shift afterwards had contrived to put Brainiac 5 in a particularly bad mood, the kind that would have previously had him locking himself away in his laboratory for a good few days and shouting at anyone who tried to come inside. But since he no longer had that option and he would have been a sixth-level intellect to try shouting at the nurses, he did the next best thing, which was stalking all the way back to his room while ignoring his nurse's attempt to be cheery (and her long-suffering sigh when that failed) and all but flinging himself into his chair.
His nurse set his dinner down in front of him and he thought he saw her direct a sympathetic look at Peter out of the corner of his eye before she left, but the Coluan was too busy glaring at his meal to be bothered to check beyond that. He knew he should eat something, since he hadn't had anything for lunch for some reason, but for the moment he felt too angry to do even that much.
Should be *bitching senses*. :|bemotionl4arobotFebruary 9 2010, 05:43:38 UTC
Brainiac 5 nearly snapped back an answer at that, but managed to narrowly avoid doing that and potentially ruining the rest of the conversation. It wasn't Peter's fault he'd had a bad afternoon, he reminded himself.
"I'm not," he said eventually. "I'm just." He wasn't sure what he could say other than 'staring angrily at it'. "...it's nothing," he finished lamely.
Trying to cover for what was clearly an awkward topic, he began picking through the meal and eating a few mouthfuls of the pasta. "Did you learn anything particularly useful?" he asked around a forkful.
One would have expected Erika to be upset about being forced back into the "box" that was her room, but she was actually quite happy with the arrangement. The source of her happiness was laid out on the bed: an intricate outfit of ruffles, lace and roses. She was sure that the outfit wasn't there when she first inspected the room, so it was clearly a gift from Bernkastel. The right to wear such fine clothing instead of this dreary generic garb was a sign that she clearly still an important piece on the board.
Along with the clothes, the various notebooks retrieved from both Erika's desk and her absent roommate's was open and already filled with writing. Not quite enough to fill up either book, but it was better to catalog the information into different books then have to keep flipping through pages and eventually run out of space. Neatness and organization was essential for a good detective, after all.
According to her nurse, she was supposed to have a roommate, but Erika had been the first person in the room, and the only person

The trip between the Sun Room and her room was far, far longer than any of the others she'd made that day except the first -- and that had been when Nunnally was rested and best able to do it. By now she was tired and sore in muscles she'd almost forgotten she had, but still she remained determined to do everything she possibly could on her own, refusing the nurse's offer of a wheelchair. She had had more than enough of wheelchairs; if she could move on her own two legs, actually walking (even if it was assisted) then she wanted to do it
( ... )
Finally, after some time, Erika could hear voices (and noises) just outside the door. She looked, watching the entire spectacle as her roommate arrived, crutches in hand and refusing any offers for help. So obviously, Erika didn't offer to help the girl herself. Why bother, if she would not accept an offer from her nurse? There was no need to waste time on a question already answered for the sake of "courtesy", but she kept her eyes on the girl the whole time

The name certainly sounded Japanese, which made Nunnally wonder, especially after her conversation with Honey. Were there really that many Japanese people here? Or had someone deliberately placed her with one, for whatever reason? She could also be overthinking things a little -- the fact that so many other things here were a puzzle didn't necessarily imply that everything was

"I slept all day," he said quietly. "How was your doctor's visit?"
Something was ... odd here, but he wasn't quite sure what. Perhaps he'd just been asleep too long?
