Javert scanned the larger hallway as they stepped into it. There was a small group here, but they were clearly patients as well, and there didn't seem to be any trouble. He chose to disregard them, turning his attention to the hallway ahead.

Clutching his broken broomhandle in one hand and the light in the other, Armand swept his light across the other group. He couldn't see anything amiss. The staircase they'd used to come upstairs was close by and tempting. He resolutely turned from it to follow Javert's retreating back.

It sounded as if there were people ahead.

Perhaps caution was a good idea. He’d never seen the second floor before, due to the patients being kept to the first floor, and it was possible that monsters appeared more frequently here.

He thought back to the maps that his roommate had showed him. There had been a room marked ‘Patient Possessions Storage’, and it had been somewhere near here. Perhaps that would be of some use.

Claude blinked at Luke's hesitation to explain what had happened, and he couldn't help but frown a little. He didn't say anything for a moment. After all, what did someone say to something like that? "I'm sorry" sounded entirely too trite and half-hearted, and he doubted Luke wanted any sympathy anyway. Eventually, he settled on nodding. He hadn't seen anything wrong with asking, but now he felt a little bad for dredging up those kinds of memories ( ... )

Claude was willing to change the subject, which Luke was very grateful for. Though he was surprised when Asch actually answered the question. Somewhat. Well, that was all settled, so there was no need to brood on it. At least no one got angry, so it felt like a small victory for Luke.

"Yeah! It's just beyond this turn!" Luke grinned. Of course, he didn't know exactly which door it was, since he couldn't see anything yesterday... maybe Asch remembered.

Which made him remember something else.

"... Wait, do we have to break the door down again?"

Asch offered a shrug in response, before switching his flashlight on and shining it around the hallway briefly. "If the people running this place know we break into various rooms each night," which seemed to be the case, "then it makes sense that they'd fit the rooms with new locks each night."

It was an irritating possibility, but there was something else on his mind. That being, just where was that file room? Masaru had been the one to try opening the door the previous night, and even then it seemed it had been a random choice. That, combined with the fact that they were in the dark last night, meant he wasn't sure which door would lead to that room.

Not that he was willing to admit that, of course.

"Either way it's possible, but we won't know for sure until we get there."

All girls enjoyed being called young, that was a give, but the comment he had spoken off the top of his head hadn't been meant as a compliment. She just looked young. But he just nodded in response to her rhetorical question.

"I've been to America before," he corrected. "I've been everywhere at least once. I prefer Japan - get your boyfriend to take you there one day." Japan was also a country somewhat known for it's miniscule number of 'random attacks', at least in the vampire community. It was the home of the council of ancients, after all. The gathering place of many noble vampires.

Japan, also the place where indigo tattoos are used and - He shook his head as though negating a phantom question, and gritted his teeth. As they came up on the final three locked doors, the vampire made a note of the most important label he'd seen so far: Electrical Utilities. Obviously the lack of light didn't bother him, but at one point, being able to tamper with a fuse box for the building might be useful ( ... )

“Wow. It must be fun to travel.” The only time she had traveled to somewhere worth mentioning was last year, and … well, she didn’t really like to talk about that time much. “I’ll have to ask him sometime. Who knows, he might just say yes.”

Bella hadn’t noticed when Aidou shook his head, but it was for the better. If she had seen that, she would have asked him if he was okay again and who knows what he would have said. He was probably annoyed as it was.

“Hmmm” Turning back towards Aidou at his comment, Bella looked up at the boy with a frown, trying to figure it out. She couldn’t really judge by age anymore, considering Jacob had the mind of a sixteen year old boy, yet looked to be twenty-five. “You look my age, if not a bit younger? I’d say seventeen just to be safe.” Shrugging her shoulders in a nonchalant way, she spoke again after a few seconds of silence. “Are you still in school?”

"When money's available, there's no point in not travelling. America is a surprisingly boring country." Small talk just wouldn't come easy - and it was no surprise, as derived no enjoyment in it at the moment, anyway - but he tried to keep going. Think about the irony. Wasn't it funny? She would taste so good, but here was being such a well-behaved vampire and not laying a hand on her; instead, they were engaged in conversation ( ... )

[ From here with Eddie. ]

At Eddie's insistence that there was nothing wrong (which was obviously a lie, but Peter wasn't going to push it), Peter headed up the stairs, taking the lead now. He was pretty sure the other man didn't have much of an idea where he was going, anyway, if their progress so far was any indication, so better that he, the uninjured one, stay in front.

There was no immediate danger when they got to the top - in fact, the only thing nearby was a group of four patients chatting. Maybe all the monsters had already been fought up here. It had been a while since night had started, so that wasn't such a ridiculous theory.

A long hallway was in front of them, with a smaller, narrower one to the right. He figured it would take less time to explore the shorter one, so he turned in that direction next.

And back down the hall that didn't look at all familiar to Brock. Parker wasn't moving that fast, but it still felt like he had to struggle to keep up. While he could get a general sense that the symbiote was putting in major overtime to keep them on their feet, the fact was that humans generally weren't meant for falls from any height, much less the shit he'd been through and that'd of course slowed him down a bit. The only thing keeping him from taking the rest he probably did need was this competitive edge to one-up Parker and show him that dammit, he wasn't going to pussy out just because of something like this.

Where to next? It would probably be best if they tried every door, since there was no way they could know where the pharmacy was going to be. Searching each and every room was going to prove tedious, but there was no other way to go about it if Eddie wasn't familiar with the second floor.

That just made Peter all the more pressed to commit where he had been to memory. He wasn't sure if he would be able to recall everything in perfect detail, but he had always been pretty good at memorization, if his grades were any indication.

As there was another door directly across from them, the logical thing would be to go there next.
