“What do you want to know?”

Peter was startled out of his gloom by the question. He hadn’t really thought Jared would know anything. In truth he had only asked because he desperately wanted to know but thought only Nathan knew the truth. He considered his answer for a moment. What did he want to know? Would figuring this puzzle heal him or destroy him.

“Everything.” He said after a moment. He wanted to know everything about the person he fell in love with. It made him feel so pathetic he buried his burning face in Jared’s chest “Everything, what’s Nathan told you?”

Jared sighed remembering. “Not a lot, to tell you the truth. He keeps it all inside. It wasn’t like his parents would listen and I was a complete stranger who believed my boss was an asshole who didn’t give a damn.” Jared grimaced at how wrong he had been.

“It was only when his parents died he finally broke down. I was the closest one to him at the time, depressingly. He got totally smashed one night and told me everything about his screwed up life.

“Nathan only cared about his brother in the middle of it. He has the same name as you, y’know.” Jared said smiling softly at the coincidence. He held no idea the pain those words caused his friend.

He grew serious again. “You know he was murdered right?” Peter nodded. “He was taken from under Nathan’s nose when they were playing in central park. He told me he only looked away for a second and his brother was gone. He never forgave himself.” Jared went quiet and Peter guessed he was remembering Nathan back when the story was coming out of his lips.

Peter eventually interrupted his thoughts. “Did he ever mention what Peter was like when he was alive?”

“Yeah, he did.” The smile that suddenly appeared on Jared’s face was like a sun coming from behind a dark cloud. “If my brother worshiped me half as much as Nathan worshipped that kid then we wouldn’t have fought nearly so much.” He laughed. “He said his parents gave him an angel as a brother to make up for making his life a living hell. He was 13 when the kid was born. I couldn’t imagine such a big age difference in my family and it seems to me Nathan mostly raised the kid by himself, spoiled him rotten and protected him from the wishes of their parents. He said to me he’d rather die then let Peter be forced into the same choices he was.”

He looked down at Peter and saw the pain darkening his face. He couldn’t help but reach out and take his hand. “ I know you love him and I know he loves you. If you just give it a chance maybe you can get over whatever’s this thing between the two of you is.” Jared said gently. Still, Peter shook his head.

“I can’t…” his voice rough and broken.

“Just give him one more chance…” Jared prompted,” …and maybe Nathan won’t have to lose anyone else he cares about. Maybe you can finally find what your travelling never let you see.”

Peter sat thinking for nearly ten minutes and Jared nearly started to worry he had forgotten he was there. Then, slowly, something dawned in Peter’s eyes and Jared knew he had won the battle before he nodded.

Nathan had been standing, staring at the same picture, for hours. He had heard Jared banging on the door earlier but had just ignored him. It had been a while since then and nothing else had bothered him in quite the same way.

The picture was Peter as he last saw him. 4 year’s old and the cutest most innocent eyes in the world, staring out the window. The eyes were still the same but everything else had changed. His hair had grown out, his mouth and shoulders were crooked but none of it took away how gorgeous he was.

Nathan wondered if, even growing up with Peter for a brother, he could have been able to stop himself falling in love with him. Even back then Peter had been able to slip under his defences like no one had ever could before.

When he had been younger, it drove him crazy that even though he was supposed to be angry with his little brother for breaking something or accidentally grazing his knee, all he had to do was see Peter, look the slightest bit unhappy and it was him that felt ashamed of himself.

Nathan smiled but the movement caught his eye in the mirror. He glared, fist hitting out in anger. He didn’t feel the pain. It was only a drop in the bucket. He was stunned to find blood staining his knuckles. He pulled his fist back to evaluate the damage, rather that than look at his reflection again.

He was hurting Peter now by not explaining to him what their relationship should become after this. He needed to give a definite answer. An answer that would tear their lives to shreds either way but was still better than the possibilities of what if. Were they to be lovers or brothers?

Jensen stroked Sadie behind the ear as he cursed himself over and over again. Why did he do that? Why would he cut himself off from Jared, pretending to be his former cocky confident self again? It was completely irrational to feel jealous of Peter. But he couldn’t help it and he couldn’t stop feeling it now.

He heard scrapings in the lock and was surprised how relieved he was Jared was home. He moved to the door quickly and was just in time to see a girl waltz in. Standing back he waited for her to notice him but she never did. She seemed too busy concentrating on what she was doing to pay attention to anything around her.

She was small and pretty and she moved out of sight, Jensen followed her. The dogs followed her and seemed to know her because they didn’t jump on her like the new friend they had seen him as.

He cleared his throat to catch her attention. He watched as she turned around. “Who are you?” she asked, not sounding scared in the least, just annoyed he was there.

“I’m Jensen, Jared’s friend.” He replied. He was unsettled with the way she was observing him. It was the same way someone would observe an insect that had somehow wriggled its way into his or her food. “And you?”

“I don’t think that’s any of your business.” She hissed. “I think you should you leave now.” She turned and flounced into the kitchen.

Jensen followed. “Excuse me! I’m not going anywhere.” He had realised by now that this girl couldn’t be anything but Jared’s psycho ex. She turned around with the impatience of someone schooling an ignorant child.

“Look I don’t know what he told you but I could care less. Jared is my boyfriend and neither you nor that filthy little parasite Peter is going to come between us. Ask yourself one question. While you’re here all alone, who is he alone with?” She sighed wistfully wiping the hair out of her face.

Still as long as he stays with me in the end like he promised I don’t care who he has his little disgusting flings with. That doesn’t mean I enjoy him flaunting them in front of me like this. Now get out.”

She was lying. Jensen knew she was lying. He could tell by the way she was smirking while she was saying it. Like a private joke only she knew about. But a twinge of doubt left him feeling incredibly guilty.

“You broke up.” He said.

“No…” she laughed. He tried to stare he down but it was hopeless. This girl was clearly insane. Time to try another tactic

“Then you won’t mind if I call him, then, to ask?” Jensen bluffed. He reached for the landline without knowing the number.

“Fine, alright I admit it, we broke up.” Sandy finally admitted.

“Then, you should leave now.” He said, wanting to get this girl away from him as soon as possible. “or I’m going to ring the police.”

“Oh don’t be a spoilsport. I was just trying to surprise Jay. I heard he’d come home, is all.”

“There’s no way you could have known that.” He said and saw her smile again. “Leave!” He repeated more urgently this time.

This time when she didn’t leave he pressed a number he did know. 911.

It happened too fast for him to react. Somehow Sandy pulled out a knife from the cupboard and sunk it into his stomach in a harsh. “You fucking bastard. You think I would let you take him away from me just like that. You’re sorely mistaken.”

The pain overwhelmed him and he dropped to him knees. He heard the dogs barking distantly. Looking from his blood stained hands to the girl in front of him shocked and horrified. She was the last thing he saw before he passed out.
