Prologue

Chapter Two

Texas, Afternoon

Jensen watched as Peter’s friend from New York started to dance with Sophia. He was adorable. Jensen almost wanted to adopt him and take him home but he remembered the old ad. A puppy is forever not just for Christmas. He didn’t want to be the one to break Jared’s heart again after this Sandy girl had.

“You like him.” Chris said happily. He put his drink down on the counter and continued to watch his friends open expression.

“What!” Jensen protested, “…do not!” but he was cut off when he saw Chad Michael Murray worm his way in between Jared and Sophia and put his filthy hands all over the younger guy. Jared struggled to get Chad off him, looking completely freaked as Chad groped his ass.

He jerked forward, all ready to go save him, when he saw Tom was already doing so. He said something to Chad and got glared at for his trouble as Chad stomped off to sulk. Jared thanked Tom profusely, flashing him that killer dimpled smile and he was shocked to find himself completely jealous.

Forcing himself to calm down and lean back on the counter, he remembered he had been talking to Chris and turned back to him. The creepy “I told you so” grin spreading across Chris’s face was enough to make him shudder.

“Alright, I may like him a little.” Jensen admitted annoyed and turned away to hide the warmth burning his cheeks. Chris laughed and smacked him on the back.

“About time, dude, you are in so deep.” Chris was grinning so hard it was making his own cheeks ache but he smiled back, knowing his friend was only looking out for him.

He jumped when Jared suddenly appeared in front of him laughing hard and smiling like the sun.

“Come on, let’s see your moves, Mr. Big shot.” He challenged and dragged Jensen on the dance floor before he even knew what was happening. Something no one had ever been able to do before.

The meeting started as easily as Jared had said it would. Mr. Rosenbaum, or Mike as he had told them to call him, was a really awesome guy if not a little eccentric. Peter had barely been able to utter a hello when he began listening to Mr. Petrelli argue with Mr. Rosenbaum about one thing or another. That was until Tracy got her phone call.

She excused herself and went a little way away. From the minute she answered, it was clear she was upset. She nodded into the phone after awhile; no longer able to comprehend they couldn’t see her through it, in her distress.

Nathan tried his best to go on with his pitch, Peter gave him that, but he kept glancing Tracy’s way every once in awhile, worry stirring in his eyes. …So he does have a human side, Peter thought smugly.

Tracy came back on the verge of tears but she still held herself back. “I’m sorry, Mr Petrelli, Mr. Rosenbaum. I have to go. My sister’s been in an accident and there’s no one else to go see her.”

“Wait a minute, you can’t drive in this state and a taxi will take forever.” Nathan topped her with a simple touch to her arm. He looked back to Mr. Rosenbaum clearly not wanting to end the meeting and risk losing the account but too worried about Tracy to say so.

Peter jumped in on impulse wanting to help. “I’ll carry on here; everything will be fine until you can come back. Look after Tracy, okay?”

Nathan looked at him surprised and hesitated a second. Knowing that Peter probably didn’t have a clue what was going on or how important it was, worried him. However, there was no trace of doubt in Peter’s demeanour so he took a chance to trust him. He couldn’t leave Tracy in this state.

“Alright, I’ll try and be back in under an hour. I’m extremely sorry about this Mr. Rosenbaum.” He tried to apologise but Mike waved it off.

“No, it’s fine. Hurry up, though or she might as well have took the chance in the taxi.” Mike tried to lighten the mood but it was clear he was worried too. He saw the first glimmer of respect pass between him and Nathan in that moment and Peter was impressed with how mature the two were being for the first time since the meeting had started.

Peter watched them go before turning back to Mike and found himself being watched.

“So what exactly is the problem?" Peter asked.

Jared sniggered as Jensen waggled his eyebrows at him. He held up a finger to signal to be quiet and quickly checked over the balcony to see if anyone was coming and he heard voices getting ready to leave.

Jensen signalled, 1, 2, and 3! And they lifted the whole crate of beer and poured it over the edge onto the unsuspecting victim below. They heard an inarticulate scream of someone being doused then an amazing range of curses.

“Mother fucker!” That was when they realised it was Chad.

Jared turned to Jensen and saw his face turned bright red with barely contained laughter and he couldn’t hold it anymore. He burst out laughing so hard he doubled over with the agony of it. He couldn’t stop it, especially when Jensen joined in too and they both were rolling on the floor, feeling any tension or stress from their lives before they met each other just roll off them, and just smiled at each other.

“Where are you taking me Peter?” Mike called but was really enthralled, not used to being dragged around to places without a meeting planned and bodyguards checking the place out beforehand.

“You’ll see.” Peter grinned back and took him down a side alley before coming to an empty street. It was amazingly narrow, a one-way street really and would be really hard to get to by cars so that’s why he found it amazing that there was a little open café in the middle.

There must have been no traffic down that part because there was chairs spread out into the street and were lit by candles and fairy lights over wires. The place was buzzing with but not packed, like most places in New York.

“What is this place?” Mike asked breathless. Peter grinned, sweeping back the hair from his face, satisfied with Mike’s reaction. He led Mike to a seat and pulled out a chair for him because he was afraid the older guy would fall over in his awed state.

“This will be your new supplier or at least one of them. I found this place last time I came to New York. It sells the best cakes in the world and is extremely popular. At least with the people who know about it, so you have to keep it a secret, okay?”

Mike nodded, but he was still distracted with the beauty of the place to concentrate on him fully. While Mike was taking in the scenery he ordered them some cakes that Mike might like and an Order list for him to look through.

“You can order your cakes from here but as for your other suppliers are you comfortable with shipping them from other states or countries or is it just New York?” Peter asked with a crooked grin.

“As long as the foods good I don’t mind.” Mike answered automatically.

“I was hoping you’d say that.” He flipped out a napkin and borrowed a pen from Mike who seemed to carry several. “While I was in Italy there was this company that made almost everything you could want but you’ll want to just ask for these items.” Peter said writing down a list of items, a phone number and an address. “Now, back in Texas as you know they make the best barbeque you ever tasted so here’s the best store I’ve found for it and you have never tasted ice cream until you’ve had it from Cornwall which is in the UK.

“You’ve been to a lot of places.” Mike observed quietly and Peter’s smile faded quickly.

“Yeah, well you know…” he was saved from having to answer when the cakes came. Mike took one bite and moaned. Peter started to laugh as he had never known the phrase ‘making love to your food’ until he had seen Mike plough through that cake as though he was a starved man.

Mike ordered some champagne between bites, declaring that they needed the best to go with the best, which luckily they had and poured them both a glass despite Peter’s protests.

“Come on Peter” Mike pleaded.

“No, I’m really not good with alcohol, trust me.” He replied knowing he wasn’t going to get through.

“Just one glass, please, this deserves a toast. If all the suppliers equal up to that gorgeous cake, I am signing with your company and nothing is going to stop me.” Mike whooped grinning like there was no tomorrow. He could see the moment when Peter caved to his very unsubtle bribe.

Jensen walked Jared up to his door, making sure he didn’t get lost in his new surroundings.

“Thank you for tonight, Jensen. I really, really needed it. I was beginning to go mad thinking that maybe Sandy’s behaviour was normal and I just couldn’t see it.” Jared avoided looking up at Jensen, knowing that if he did, the other man was going to think he was pathetic.

“Hey, come on, don’t act like this is the end, I’ll see you tomorrow. Just don’t steal all the hot water before I get here.” Jensen joked, sarcasm dripping off every word to try and get a rise out of Jared again.

He was stunned when Jared just met his eyes and smiled. It made his heard pound just that little bit faster.

“That smile is gonna be the death of me,” Jensen muttered under his breath yet Jared heard and his eyes widened a fraction as Jensen leaned forward and planted a very chaste kiss on his mouth.

“Good night, Jare.” Jensen said before he pulled himself away. He saw Jared raise a hand to his lips and was relieved to see a slight smile if not wonder and gave Jared a cocky wink as he turned to make his way home as coolly as possible even though he wanted to whoop for joy.

Nathan got in the car with Tracy, both relieved now they knew Niki; Tracy’s sister was going to be fine and asleep until morning.

“Do you think Peter’s doing alright?” Tracy asked. Nathan didn’t answer because he wasn’t sure whether or not he should have anymore. He didn’t know what had led him to do such a thing as to leave the future of an important account in the hands of a stranger who for all he knew, knew nothing about anything but when he had looked into those brown eyes his instinct had told him to trust the guy, through and through.

His phone rang. “Nathan Petrelli.” He answered.

“Mr. Petrelli, It’s Michael Rosenbaum. I’m here with Peter near Colbert Street and he’s kinda… passed out. He won’t wake up and I don’t know where he lives…” he left off leaving the unasked question to be answered.

“I’ll be there right away.” He gritted his teeth as he said. That was the last time he was gonna listen to his instincts ever again.
