Philosophical Assbags - Boy have I been snarky lately

May 09, 2009 18:34

Ugh! Just fucking ugh!

This thread started so innocently. But then someone brought up the philosophers, and someone else proclaimed a lack of interest in ancient schools of philosophy.

Then it became a raging shit storm.

My at least half if not predominately Hellenic friends list are probably all nodding your heads right now. Yeah, you've seen this ( Read more... )

assholes, abject douche baggery, hellenism, forum, internet

Gods know why he thinks he is so enlightened. That so-called poetry he writes for Apollo is about the most god-awful crap I have ever seen.

I suppose you could say these are the Hellenic answer to the Folkish problem. We don't care about blood, just perceived intelligence.

I think I must have bypassed that particular nugget of wisdom first time through, that is very LOL worthy.

I guess that's one good thing about the Greeks, far less beer can smashers. :-P

Intelligence is great, its the focusing on perceived intelligence that's the problem. You know like being really into the philosophy schools = super intelligent, and not being interested = probably too dumb/lazy to follow. Yeah, no.

Hey, a few days ago over on his forum of doom, Timmeh put forth the opinion that the philosophers are the ones that are *truly* loved by the gods. And here I thought trying to claim the gods loved you more was hubris, pure hubris. I guess when you're as loved by the gods as Tim and his followers you can just do whatever you want.

(though this guy isn't one of Tim's followers, he's been around a long time, long before I first reared my head and he used to be far less insane than he is now, since I was never close to him I can only speculate on what the hell happened to him)

When I first encountered the Hellenismos lists years ago, stuff like this made me run screaming from it until I found Sannion's group.

Really, the intellectual pretensions from people who otherwise seem like total losers is just mind boggling. I'm just glad most of these people hang out in their own lairs for the most part.

All that enlightenment, and what do they do with it? Bully people on the internet. Really, you'd think such a superior being as they believe themselves to be would be beyond the need to tear others down to make themselves feel better. And you think you're God material. Ha!

I'm very glad I didn't encounter this bullshit until later when I had been around long enough to gain some confidence or I would have run screaming too. I remember Todd from back then a little bit, and I would swear he never used to be that bad. I never had much to do with him since we had nothing in common spiritually or otherwise and ... well, I always sensed this unapproachable air there, to be honest. So don't quote me on it, but I don't remember hearing shit like this until far more recently. (maybe all that enlightenment was a little much for him, LOL)

Exactly! I look at that and think, if that's your real priority in life, why the hell are you wasting your time on forums and stuff with all these lesser people anyway? Why aren't you spending 24-7 contemplating your navel like you should be to attain your godhood?

No, Todd was not always that bad. In fact, he used to be very anti-mysticism. Then he started getting intrigued by it, and then... well it went downhill from there. For some people, venturing into mysticism just messes with them.

I've seen far less of him in the last few years since I cut my list participation way down (and maybe he has as well, don't know) and I was never in KA where I guess he does the majority of his talking now. I've been hearing little rumors for a while now that he's really lost it, but this is the first I've seen it up close. There is really just no excuse for this ( ... )

I wanted to break down and rant about that thread as well. Honestly, his attitude and words are no different than fundamentalist christians or enlightened atheists. I also did not agree with the quoting of bible passages, I see enough of that from a news-feed site and other blogs. I sometimes enjoy them, but like I said, it's detrimental to the group as whole and that's the last thing we need, especially when potential new-members come in. (I almost ran screaming, too, when I came across other self-proclaimed Almight-Know it alls...)

I just find it amusing that if you don't know philosophy, you can't know the gods or the world. I've met philosophers where constant study made them atheists. It cuts both ways.

It says something when a number of people can say in all honesty that they have never met a NeoPlatonist that they liked. I don't know where the attitude comes from, like I said in an above comment, you would think such enlightened people would be above the need to use their alleged specialness to batter the rest of us (and the fact that there are people in that camp, not Todd but others, who don't really believe that the gods interact with individuals and those of us who claim relationships are just trying to appear special, is that much more hilarious ( ... )

Mainly because we've yet to get around to it.

...but in part because I told Gavin it's her turn, and she hasn't posted it there yet. ;-)
