intro;

When confronted with the idea of pimping this show I realized I had no idea of how to do it. Whenever you tell somebody in just some words what the show is about they look at you as if you were crazy. So, bare with me all my explanations, with all the text, because there’s going to be plenty. If you just want to see the pretty, do so, but I highly recommend you check the explanation before judging the show. (Not that my explanation will be good or anything, but experience tells me people just pass by this show because they believe it’s something it’s not!). Anyway. Hope you enjoy it and that you want to check it out by the end of this ♥

the premise;

From executive producer Michael Green (NBC’s "Heroes") comes a riveting new drama about a modern day monarchy. "Kings" is a contemporary re-telling of the timeless tale of David and Goliath. This series is an epic story of greed and power, war and romance, forbidden loves and secret alliances -- and a young hero who rises to power in a modern-day kingdom.

From NBC’s Kings’ site..

So, what makes this show so special? Why you should expect this series to be different? Why that summary can’t be consider enough to describe Kings. here are the reasons.

01 • the real content;

There’s so much more than meets the eye in this show. You are transported to this new world, this new city that is so much like us and yet it’s not. It’s modern, it has technology, it has wars, people, city and rural. There’s monarchy, there’s ministers, there’s power and religion, believers and not believers. There’s a bit of everything.

This story goes far beyond the simply David vs Goliath, it goes beyond IMHO the inspiration it grows from. This is a story about people. About love, war, peace, politics, economy, faith, loyalty, family, treason, betrayal and so much more.

I would resume it to: a really deep, powerful, insightful, story about different people.

02 • the pilot;

Oh yes, Goliath is consider a reason in my Kings’ dictionary. I have liked a lot of pilots I have seen, a lot have made me curious, I had never fell in love like with this one. Goliath practically opens the doors to the world of Gilboa, and once you are in, you don’t want to leave. It shows everything, the mix of themes, the people, the depth. It’s the beginning of a journey and it captivates you from the start. It’s a really interesting pilot, concluded in its own but way to open. Makes you curious, makes you want to know more, to see things played out. It puts almost everything on the table and it does it in such a way that nothing seems rushed, crowed or something like that. It goes smoothly giving you enough information to know where we stand and poking the right places as to want to know where it’ll go.

Another thing you might want to considerate about the pilot is how much of a standalone story it is. Don’t get me wrong, as I said, it opens a lot of doors, it actually introduces you to the story, to the characters, it’s the start of their story. And yet, it works a mini-film on its own. So, go, watch it, try it, because it’s a great story on its own. Gorgeous.

03 • the characters;

If you have to ask me, what makes this story so great, it’s the characters. If I was to judge, I’d say I had never seen such human characters. So believable, so full of emotions, so kick-ass and weak at the same time.

AWESOME COMPLEX CHARACTERS.

You’ll love them, hate them and despise them. You’ll want to hug them, hit them, throw them off a cliff and then save them. And you will probably want to do that all at the same time. Example: If you are not confused about how you feel about Silas (the King) then there must be something wrong with you. (joking :D!).

Everything in this show is in the end a story about them, nothing else, no retelling, no big bible myth, no war, no politics, it’s all about them and how they live all that. Such amazing characters, that I cannot leave without introducing you to the five more important ones.

Queen Rose: the awesome HBIC. At first you wonder if she is important at all and not just the pretty face of the court, and then, before you realize, you found out that she moves more threads in this house and kingdom that you would give her credit for.

King Silas: You’ll hate him, you’ll love him. King Silas is everything you expect a King to be, bad and good, the best gray around. He believes so much and yet at the same time he doesn’t. Silas is a man wore by time, by power, he cares but he does also wrong because he does.

Prince Jack: Your first impression: what a spoiled brat. Or at least, that was my first impression. Jack is an incredible character. Incapable of be who he is because of what he is supposed to become. Surrounded by responsibilities, power, and need. It’s a character that develops under your nose in the most natural way, whose actions are those of a Prince and not of the man he wants to be. A boy that has to deal with the intromission of David in his life, in his family, in everything he has ever fought for.

David Shepherd: I can’t be objective over David, I love him too much. David it’s just perfect. He hopes too much, he believes too much. He is way too naïve, but you can’t help but love him and cheer for him. David Shepherd is a simply boy that after becoming a hero gets involved in these worlds of politics and media he barely knows. It’s like a lost child in a big new world. Seeing him grow on it, learning the ways of this world and fighting against them is simply enthralling.

Princess Michelle: To go against most fandom, I love Michelle. Michelle is not the typical princess and yet it’s not the complete opposite. As Allison Miller (who plays Michelle) described her, there are no big dresses or tiaras. She really cares about people AND ACTS FOR IT. She is intelligent, pretty independent considering her position (even though we see her struggling for that), she is all the free her brother is not. But she is also elegant; she cares a lot about her family and is in many ways daddy’s girl. No, I can’t be objective with Michelle either!

Other: The insufferable uncle, the creepy nephew, the hotawesome reverend, the kick-ass working-class mom, the brothers, the old prisoner everybody thinks dead, the kick-ass multimillionaire girl, the rejected boy, the awesome assistant, even the dorky guards have a big place in this story. No one is left behind and they are all awesome in their own way.

04 • the cast;

If you have to ask me, what makes this story so great, it’s the characters. But you can’t have awesome characters, incredible interactions if the cast doesn’t fit, doesn’t work. And god, this one does work. I love them so much, that I’d follow anywhere now (and I’m not much of a follower, and maybe not anywhere, GoGi is my limit so far, sorry Sebastian!).

Anyway, we have names like: Ian McShane (Deadwood), Sebastian Stan (The covenant), Chris Egan (Eragon), Macaulay Culkin (Home alone). And we also have: Susanna Thompson, Allison Miller, Dylan Baker, Marlyne Afflack, Leslie Bibb, and lots more of talented people.

And you will think having a great name takes care of the flaws of the rest, and I’m going to tell you that you are wrong. Yes, Ian McShane does wonders as King Silas, but everybody blows off in this series, everybody is up there, shinning. I am not usually a good acting spotting person, but I assure you, everybody here does what they do best: acting. Sebastian Stan and Chris Egan deserve recognition because they are superb and so does the rest. You won’t spot anyone that you’ll say OMGBAD. Or you won’t see the difference you’ll expect from someone (pretty) new as Allison Miller to someone as experienced as Ian McShane. And their relationships just SHINE OUT of the screen, you feel them all, and that’s amazing.

A magnificent cast if you have to ask me.
Also, did I say that most of the cast is really pretty?

05 • the plot and subplots;

Let’s be honest. Kings is unique and though I’ll keep repeating that the best thing is the characters, I’ll admit there’s something better: the characters as they develop through the plot and subplots. I said the pilot was like a mini-movie, well, the whole series flows like a movie, and it does so perfectly. Everything fits, nothing is just there to fill, and when you think it can’t get better it actually does. I spent the last 4/5 episode in the border of a fangirl attack (I have witnesses who I would talk for hours about Kings even though they didn’t know about it). Nothing is like you are expecting but it doesn’t seem forced, on the contrary, after it happens it seems the only possible thing. Quirk turns, amazing finale, incredible filling subplots that just make the bigger view. Everything works together and flows. It just flows.

Episodes 1, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11 & 12 are my tops ones, if I really had to choose. But I love them all. (And yes, I do realise I named more than half the season, but what. *loves*). I was going to name the episodes, but I want to keep this spoiler free, but there’s one image per episode and for what I consider makes the big plot of it, some no so direct).

06 • the dialogue/quotes;

I like my shows quotable. That’s a fact. And this show has such amazing quotes that I’ll sit one day and I’ll probably be forever taking down notes. I have read around that some people think the Shakespearian/Modern mix in the dialogue is confusing, I find it quite endearing, inspirational, and practically poetic and somehow I love it because of it. I have no problem whatsoever on understanding it either. It’s unique, and for me, it gives the show this mix between reality and myth that the whole scenery shows. I’ll let the quotes speak for themselves.

07 • the music;

Yes. This is a point because I’m actually dying to get a soundtrack. The music in this show is so deep, so… gorgeous. IDK. I’ll leave you four known examples. Music is greatly used in the show, and I think it’s the continuity sometimes that makes it so enchanting. Simply gorgeous. I’ll let you discover it :D

Escucha "Alberto cobo Un sospiro. liszt"

Escucha "Ludwig van beethoven Moonlight sonata ksiezycowa sonata fortepianowa nr"

Escucha "Julius grocholski Tchaikovsky album for the youth op 39 no 6 the sick doll"

And in the not so classic note:

Escucha "Ladytron Ladytron - ghosts"

08 • the photography, the scenery and the like;

Let’s be fair, I can only recognize what it’s due to sets, the rest, it’s a big mix of things, and I guess that as the images are retouched, you can’t see the real colour of them. But all these facts combined make the series PRETTY. There’s this greyish, somehow orange tone to the scenes, the sets are amazing (the kind of I need to know how made them and marry them kind of.) the camera shots, everything works in such a way that you are staring in awe because it’s just so gorgeous.

This also works in creating that mystic feeling I was talking before, mixed with a bit of melancholy. And even though it’s pretty greyish in its base, it’s really colourful, especially on oranges, reds and yellows. Did I say gorgeous? And of course, these caps don’t do justice at all.

09 • the details & symbols;

It’s mostly just because of the pretty, but there’s so many symbolism in many of the actions or the photography or the simple symbols that appear. The references, the more little details that give continuity, the significance of the most little things. But it’s there, it’s present, like a background thing and makes the series so much better. Deeper. Prettier.

the behind the scenes;

Oh, I love seeing them all, it’s so cute, and it explains a bit what Kings’ is about.

the good-bye;

I’m going to be honest, we are fighting a cancellation, and guess what, I would see the series all over again even knowing it’s cancelled. It’s a great show, it deserves recognition and it deserves to be known. It deserves that we fight for it. I want to be honest; I don’t want you to crash into a wall and going OMG YOU DIDNT TOLD US.

Kings has the most amazing 13 episodes in nowadays television. And they are worth watching. For all the reasons I mentioned above, and for all those I can’t put in words or images. Kings is an incredible show you should be watching. If I haven’t convinced you with these, I don’t know how to, and it’ll be a shame, because you’ll be missing it.

The King was here. We are fan.
