Ladies and gentleman, I give you the Eels:

Everything's Gonna Be Cool This Christmas

It fits my mood on this blustery December day. And while I am here, let's get that meme business over with:

Day 20 → A hobby of yours

So, I sew. Not very well at all, but I try. My mom is an excellent seamstress, so I save all the really hard stuff for when she's around, and she helps me a lot. This most recent project would look a lot different (read: worse) without her help. Basically she did most of the finish work, so I am misrepresenting my talents here, but I figure some of you would like to see that jacket I mentioned a few weeks ago.

Pattern: McCall's M5936, with a number of adjustments for my short-waistedness and my ample chest.
Fabric: 2 yards of solid pink stretch velvet, one yard of silk crepe de chine lining fabric (totally worth the splurge).
Notions: 2 1" silver buttons

Verdict: No way could I have made this on my own! It is fully lined, for one thing, and we lengthened the sleeves, since my arms are weird and unsightly. (See also: short-waistedness and ample chest.) I feel bad that my mom ended up doing most of the work, but the fit is pretty perfect.

I apologize for not having a picture of me wearing it, but I was not suitable for public consumption by the time we finally finished on Sunday night. I will try to get a picture tomorrow, maybe, when it makes its debut at work, because this picture does not fully display either the fit or the flounce at the bottom. It's called a 'peplum'. I have never owned an article of clothing with a 'peplum' before. That's the best thing about it! Well, it's a toss-up between the peplum and the lining.

This is pretty much the vision I had in mind for a short-sleeved velvet jacket. I like that it highlights my waist, and that it's custom-fit so it hits at the right spot instead of being too long, as store-bought jackets always are. I think it flatters me, and while my original plan was for a darker pink, I'm really happy with the color I chose. It's pretty much me all over, I have to say. Plus, that lining is a dream. I am keeping this jacket forever, even when it gets too big, because I love that lining so much.

So that's my current hobby. I've been sewing since I was a kid, on and off, but I've always been 'the fat girl' and finding plus size patterns used to be really hard, which meant nothing fit me, and what did wasn't flattering. So it's just since I've lost weight that I've really been able to wear the kind of clothes I want to make, which is pretty exciting. I have some more projects waiting to be constructed when I find the time. I will be sure to spam you with pictures when I do!
