Thanks to
sockich and
starmack for the Christmas cookies. :) They look very tasty! Luckily they are virtual, because I am trying to be off the sugar again.
Today I give you three songs from Ella Fitzgerald's classic Christmas album, "Ella Fitzgerald Wishes You a Swingin' Christmas". There's one non-traditional song, one traditional, and one New Year's song. Something for everyone!
Good Morning BluesHave Yourself a Merry Little ChristmasWhat Are You Doing New Year's Eve I am still behind on pretty much everything, you guys. The lateness of this post will likely attest to that. We are making progress on the sewing project, though, and my new machine is a dream. I'm calling it The Wiz. (It's an Emerald 118. Get it?) I will tell you the story of the velvet jacket when there are pictures, but for now I will just do that meme and get it over with.
Day 17 → An art piece (painting, drawing, sculpture, etc.)
This is actually a tough one for me. My mom's an artist, see, and I spent the majority of my childhood being carted through every museum she could find. Every city we ever visited, we went to art museums and galleries. I had been to New York City several times before I graduated from high school, but until I took myself there as an adult, all I ever saw was The Met, MOMA, and the Gugenheim that one time they had a Warhol retrospective. Well, and Chinatown for the food, but we never did any shopping or tourist stuff. It was always about the art. I have seen all the great museums in Paris (and some of the not so great ones), I have even been to art museums in South Dakota. So to say that I have looked at a lot of art is not an understatement.
Picking just one piece to talk about is hard, is what I'm saying. There's Maxfield Parrish, who marries Realism and whimsy in such a wonderful way. There's Frederic Leighton, who painted beautiful portraits of beautiful women (one of which is hanging over my mantle). There's Chagall, who touches me in ways words can't convey, and Warhol, who I had such a relationship with as an angst-ridden teenager. There are so many artists to love, but my parents just brought me a print of a painting that belonged to my late grandmother, so in honor of her, I choose "The Storm" by Pierre August Cot:
It's been a fixture in my life...well, for my entire life, and now it is hanging over my vanity where I will see it every morning while I put on my makeup, and every night when I brush my teeth. I think it would make my grandmother happy to know that it is being enjoyed by someone who loves it as much as she did.
