Steve felt his back bump up against the brick wall behind him, giving him a little start. He certainly had gotten himself into a pinch, hadn't he?

"N...No, I'm afraid I don--"

"Can it!" the scraggly, painted man snapped. He certainly was making quite a display at aggressiveness! Steve hadn't seen so many skulls on one person since Juriaka (though those had been actual skulls, not elaborate tattoos).

The man continued, waving his (unimpressive, frankly, but no doubt lethal) gun in Steve's face.

"Just empty your pockets and give up the goods!"

Steve grimaced, waving his hands best he could with them pressed so closed to his body. Why wouldn't he understand?

"Sir, please...I told you already, I don't have anything of value to you! You mus--"

The hooligan clicked the hammer back practically pressing the muzzle against Steve's forehead.

Oh, dear...I'm in a great deal of danger, aren't I?!

She heard the commotion from a block away and made her way closer, crouched in a windowsill as she watched.

Gun to forehead, ready to fire. The situation was bad and only getting worse, and she scowled, trying to determine how to deal with it. A batarang, if thrown precisely, could possibly get the gun away before the man fired. Could she take the risk it wouldn't? He was so close, there would be no time to push the stranger out of the line of fire if the gun went off.

She would have to. There wasn't any time. She let herself down to the street and moved quietly, throwing the batarang when she was close enough to follow it up with a rushed spin kick at the man who had been holding the gun, aiming to put him down and out as quickly and efficiently as possible.

The gun hadn't fired, and was now lying on the pavement several feet off.

There wasn't a great deal Steve could decipher properly in that short window. A clang, part of what was probably an expletive, shuffling and a thud, the skittering of metal on concrete...

Human eyes were certainly not the best at collecting data like that, so sudden and so fast. He let out an involuntary yelp, like some unintelligible reply to the probable expletive, his body jerking against the wall and drawing his arms up to his face.

What he couldn't see what his assailant being assailed himself, groaning and clutching his head as he rolled, making a wild flail at whoever had nailed him from behind. He apparently knew better than to stay down and make an easy time of being taken by surprise...

She blocks his attempted blows, thankful for the discombulation her first attack had inflicted on him, and punches him in the face before grabbing his shoulders and kneeing him in the gut. And there's someone who's going to be regretting sticking a gun in someone else's face for a few days at least.

She takes the time to secure his hands firmly before turning to his intended victim.

"Are you all right?" she asks calmly. "It's over now. You shouldn't be in this section of town at night."

She may not be avoiding capes anymore, but that doesn’t mean she’s not staying hyper aware of her surroundings and anyone in them. So she spots her tail pretty soon and stops, turning to look at him. There doesn’t seem to be any point in pretending she hasn’t noticed him, so instead she works her way across the roofs back to him.

“Hello,” she says pleasantly enough, looking up. “Nice night to be out.”

"Cold's never bothered me much," Max says. Aggro? It didn't sound familiar. "Besides, I've got good insulation."

Ah. And that was why he'd been watching her. Amazing how much attention one symbol could attract in a town. "I've met Cass. I'm Batwoman." She says it firmly, and then adds with a smile, "The second one."

[ In retrospect he'd thrown out Chinatown maybe a little too offhandedly, over the comm. But at the very least it's a tough street that's far enough outside his regular patrol circuit to be a little short on Bat-lore. A good place to test a newcomer. And a promise is a promise.

He's a little outnumbered with the twelve thugs he's taken on, though. Outnumbered, but not outdone yet. ]

[She'd thought she might run into Dick. She definitely hadn't expected to find him fighting eleven - no, twelve thugs. The first batarang is a throw rope, tangling the legs of a thug behind Dick, and then she drops more or less on a second one.]

Found a little more trouble than you expected?

[ And just look who came calling. The voice at least is a little familiar. ]

Feel free to lend a hand.

[ A double strike from the escrimas takes care of two more, and he's working on number three with a more Nightwing-ish flip and dive. It's getting to be more comfortable, cape and all. ]

[She's starting to wonder when melee fights became the norm instead of the exception.]

I wouldn't dream of anything else.

[She wants escrima sticks, given how useful they look. But for now she settles for the age old mixture of punching a guy rushing her in the face and kneeing another in the groin, dropping to the ground to flip the one coming at her from behind. Two out of three on the ground isn't bad.]

She knows there's another Batwoman taking to the streets. She's known for some time now, but only tonight, after she's settled properly into her new living arrangements with Nill that she's out with the determination to seek this other Bat out.

She spends the first hour purposely avoiding shadows and dark corners. The red was never meant to pop during night OPS, though it could certainly attract attention if someone had a keen eye for capes.

Then she settles to a rooftop, overlooking the buildings and streets below. It's risky to leave herself out in the open like this, but it might draw the other out. Time will tell.

Despite everything, it wasn't actually her meeting with Dick that she was looking forward to least, but rather whenever she inevitably ran into the other Batwoman. She knows it's going to come sometime. Dick just wants to test her, a test she's confident she can pass.

This other Batwoman might want her to stop using the name, and Max isn't willing to give that up.

But it's no use putting it off. She's been putting too many things off recently. The meeting with Dick hadn't been horrific - who was to say this one wouldn't be decent too? So when she catches a glimpse of her on a rooftop, she walks towards her, slowly and open handed.

"Hello, Batwoman," she says.

With her cape wrapped around her, she turns to face this Batwoman. The uniform differs from hers and the others, but it's the symbol on her chest she's taken an interest in at the moment.

"Figured you'd show up eventually," she says, lips tugging into a smirk for now.

She swallows and then manages a return smile of her own. Think positive thoughts, Max, she tells herself. This will be fine.

"I thought you might want to talk," Max says. "So here I am."
