Toph was conflicted. On one hand, some people she knew from home were finally in the City. Bonus that one of them was her friend.

On the other hand, Soundwave had just.. died. And in the worst way. She'd been doing her best to pretend it hadn't happened, that he'd just been ported out, but she couldn't keep that up forever and knew it. Some stress release would be nice.

She made her way to the park, "looking" for anyone who seemed out of the ordinary once she reached the best area for fighting.

While Hiei wasn't generally inclined to fighting children, it wasn't the first time Toph had asked him for a fight--and he supposed there was no harm in seeing how competent she really was.

He didn't really know if the girl that had ventured into his area was the girl from the communicator, but he was confident he would once he heard her voice. So he dropped down from his tree--silently, though probably not to someone who got most of their sensory information from the ground--and approached her from behind.

Oh, that was definitely not invisible to her. She thought she'd "seen" someone small in that tree, and the silent leap down confirmed it. Huh, a short guy. Sweet.

However, she didn't react, acting as if she saw nothing, heard nothing, knew nothing.

Until he got within arms' reach of her, that is. In front of herself, she flicked a hand, then jerked it sharply upwards, and suddenly a pillar of rock thrust itself from the ground directly in front of his face.

"It's rude to sneak up on someone, you know."

Hiei was good enough not to jump back--among other things, he had a serious aversion to retreating from anyone, especially a child--but his hand did immediately go to his sword. Maybe this would be a good fight, after all.

"Is it." One thing Hiei was particularly proud of lately was his increasing competency in English speaking.

Rin hadn't seen the post from the communicator, and even if she had she would have ignored it. After all, she wasn't a demon or superhuman or anything like that, just an ordinary teenage girl.

Well, mostly ordinary. But that was for the best, ordinary was boring when left by itself. Boring things were not her greatest interest. Still, she was in the park anyway, and was watching a flower uncurl with a critical eye (though it was weird, it seemed to be uncurling faster than flowers had at home -- maybe it was just something about this place).

There was no feeling of anticipation or nervousness coming from Rin, so Hiei figured that she wasn't there for a fight.

She was still in what he considered to be his territory, though, and was awfully close to the tree he was sitting in.

That was why he dropped down from the tree, silently, and drifted over to see what had her so engrossed.

Of course not. Fighting, Rin figured, was kind of stupid on principle anyway. It was much better to stab someone in the back when they weren't looking, there was less chance of getting hurt and you were more sure to do the hurting you intended. Because, after all, fighting in the end was all about beating the other person.

Rin didn't have any sort of training, not really, and didn't have super senses or anything, so she didn't hear when Hiei dropped like a cat out of his tree and stalked over. What she did get was that survival instinct needles and pins there-someone-staring-at-me feeling after a second, and checked over her shoulder.

And jumped, because of course at that point he was almost on top of her. She scowled at him and scrambled to her feet.

"What are you doing?" Unfortunately, being startled and displeased, she slipped up and said this in Japanese.

"Walking in the park," he said blandly, also in Japanese. Really, it was terribly convenient to run into fellow Japanese-speakers. It made Hiei's life so much easier.

Besides, half the fun of having to interact with people was getting to mess with them, and it was much easier in his native language.

Darkdevil loitered around on a nearby rooftop for a while just watching. Call it paranoia (he'd prefer the term "reasonably cautious") but he had to be sure this wasn't some kind of set up. This guy didn't look like he was going to shed his humanoid appearance at any minute all turn pale and flaming -- you never could tell with demons, though.

Still. His senses weren't going off. It was probably safe. Well, as safe as challenging a stranger to a fight could be.

He breathed deeply and then took a leap off the ledge, landing in a crouch, grinning. "You're the demon guy. Right? I really hope so, because making a big introduction like that to some dude who's just enjoying a day in the park would be so embarrassing."

Hiei raised an eyebrow at Darkdevil's terminology. He sounded as ridiculous as Yusuke or Kuwabara.

Still, he was obviously the man from the comm, which meant he was looking for a fight. And Hiei didn't intend to disappoint in that regard.

"I am him. You came to fight, yes?" Of course, being a language he had only recently began to seriously study, his English was...less than perfect. But it was serviceable.

Darkdevil blinked at the man's... conservative use of words. Not even a dismissive remark, after all the work he put into that quip?

Still, despite the constant sarcasm, he wasn't here to make jokes. He needed a fight. Something normal in this strange place.

"No, no. I came because I wanted to be hugged. With fists." Smirking, he sized the guy up, subtly shifting into a defensive stance. "Any rules? No powers, no hitting below the belt, or can I go all out?"

"No rules. Loser is first to forfeit or die." Hiei paused, as though considering something, before amending himself. "No, a human. First to pass out."

Then he drew his sword, perhaps a suggestion that he wasn't going to make his patchwork-English motives clear.

"Ready?"

While the park was familiar to Amaterasu, she was able to scent out something unusual in the trees as she arrived, curious about just what this monster was.

While not completely confrontational, she kept herself wary, her rosary and glaive packed and ready.

Eyes decidedly fixed on the tree that Hiei was in, she walked closer with slow steps.

It was impossible to miss such a wary approach, and Hiei dropped out of his tree in a crouch and rose to face her, chin tilted in a show of arrogance.

Should Hiei be able to see her markings? herecomestheme July 29 2010, 01:56:39 UTC
"What?" asks Amaterasu, tone still neutral.

"Is there something the matter?"

I think so! violentsoftie July 29 2010, 17:42:34 UTC
"I could ask you the same," Hiei said, a touch of smugness in his voice. It came naturally to him, really.

Hiei appeared as soon as he caught sight of Mytho--honestly, he would never get used to that entrance--and approached, hands in his pockets.

"It's you," he said in English. This was the first time he and Mytho would be able to speak to each other in the same language.

Hiei lost the coat and drew his sword in one smooth motion, and took up his usual starting position.

"Let's go."

That was all the warning Mytho was given for the rush of the sword that Hiei assaulted him with immediately afterward.
